Sightseeing tour of Derbent, one of the oldest cities in the world, located on a narrow passage between the coast of the Caspian Sea and the foothills of the Caucasus.
According to various estimates, the city is from 4 to 5 thousand years old. The city has experienced tumultuous historical events, and one of the most important sections of the Great Silk Road lay here.
Derbent has been a crossroads of civilization for many hundreds of years, connecting East and West. Nowadays, the entire "old town" is an open-air museum.
There is also the oldest Juma mosque, the oldest Christian temple, the house of Peter the Great, the Khan's Palace, the fortress wall of Dagh-Bara and, of course, the mighty citadel of Naryn-Kala– the "Solar Fortress", which has protected Derbent from the invasion of nomads for thousands of years.

We will definitely take a look at the local bazaar, a colorful oriental market. An abundance of fruits and sweets, homemade mountain cheese and honey, of course, urbech is a super–product from Dagestan.

Gamsutl village, which is often called the ghost village or Dagestan Machu Picchu, is located at an altitude of 1,700 m. There is no road here, so you have to walk along the canyon for just over an hour. But it's worth it!
Gamsutl is considered one of the most ancient settlements in Dagestan, and although the village has been abandoned by people relatively recently, it seems that time has stopped here and everything around it looks more like a movie set.
Located far from modern civilization, the village impresses with its beautiful views and stunning nature. There is a unique aura and energy here that attracts a large number of tourists.
On the opposite slope of the ridge is the mountainous village of Chokh, the birthplace of many prominent Dagestani scientists, educators and military aristocracy.
The houses with colorful roofs are attached to each other, like floors in a high-rise building, with a mountain serving as one of the walls. There are many villages in Dagestan that are famous for their history. But among them, Chokh stands out for his romantic and heroic past.
Upper Gunib has a special atmosphere, the air is saturated with oxygen, and there are stunning panoramic views of majestic mountains and gorges.
But this place attracts not only with its natural beauty. It was here that the protracted and bloody Caucasian War ended on August 25, 1859, Gunib was the last stronghold of Imam Shamil.
Guided tour of historical sites: rotunda "Shamil's Gazebo" at the site of the end of the Caucasian War, "Tsarskaya Polyana", where Emperor Alexander II held a wide feast in honor of the end of the war, Gunib fortress – a witness to great historical events and "Shamil's Gate".
Saltinsky Waterfall is the only underground waterfall in Dagestan. This unique place is included in the TOP 10 natural attractions of the Republic of Dagestan.
It has been a natural monument of regional significance since 1983. An incredible sight: a waterfall bursts through the rocks from a height of 20 meters into the gorge with a powerful pressure, forming a pond under it in which you can swim.

Day 3 - Gunib — Karadakh gorge — Kahib and Goor — Datuna — mountain Keger — Gunib

Dagestan is a "land of mountains", and on this day we will discover the hidden corners of the mountainous part of the republic.
The Karadakh Gorge is a unique natural monument, a creation of nature. The "Gate of Wonders" is the name given by the locals to the gorge, whose width ranges from two to four meters with a height of rocks up to 170 meters!
The view of the Karadakh gorge is amazing – the constant semi-darkness due to the high walls, impressive boulders hanging directly overhead…
The old Kahib is hidden on the mountainside, the houses here seem to grow out of the rock, reliably hiding their inhabitants from the eyes of outsiders.
We will stroll among the ancient ruins of the tower complex, which dates back to the VIII-X centuries AD, admiring not only the architecture, but also the mountainous landscape.
Old Goor is a real pearl of Dagestan. The name of the village translates as "windy", and be careful, not only the wind blows away here, but also impressions.
It is here that you will take gorgeous photos in the "troll language", so named by tourists, which of course is a reference to the Norwegian landmark, and is not inferior to it in beauty.
You will see the ancient watchtowers, which, on the contrary, are now protected by the state, and preserve the legends of bygone centuries.
The Datun temple, built by Georgian missionaries at the end of the 10th century, dates back to the period when Christianity was of great importance in Dagestan.
There were many temples in Dagestan, but the most famous and well-preserved to this day is the Datun Temple, which is an excellent example of ancient temple architecture.

Sarykum dune is the second largest dune in the world and the largest dune in Europe. Sarykum, a piece of the Asian desert in the heart of the mountainous region, was the filming location for the cult film "The White Sun of the Desert".
Transfer to Sulak Canyon.
The grandiose Sulak Canyon, up to 1920 m deep, a great creation of nature, stretches across the territory of Dagestan for 53 km. The canyon is impressive and fascinating even in photos, and when you see it live, it takes your breath away!

Chirkey reservoir.

Day 5 - Grozny — Kezenoi Am Hoi — Shali — Grozny

Today we are heading to the high-altitude lake Kezenoy-Am, which is the largest and deepest in the North Caucasus.
We will drive through the picturesque Vedensky gorge and stop at the monument to the famous Chechen Abrek Zelimkhan near the village of Kharachoy and the mountain spring "Maiden Spit".
Lake Kezenoy-Am, spread out among mountain steppes and rocks, impresses with its beauty. The lake is located at an altitude of 1869 meters above sea level.
A short excursion to the ruins of the ancient village of Khoi, with an inspection of the combat and signal towers hanging over a deep gorge, arched buildings of the highlanders, artificial terraces for agriculture.

Day 6 - Sightseeing tour in Grozny and Vladikavkaz

Grozny today is a very beautiful and hospitable city, reborn from the ashes of a distant war. We will visit the Grozny City high-rise complex, with an ascent to the panoramic platform on the 33rd floor, from where you can enjoy a view of the city and the surrounding area.
The Flower Park near the Grozny City complex, also popularly known as the Park of Wonders, is one of the most popular places in Grozny.
The spiritual heart of Grozny is the Heart of Chechnya Mosque, which resembles a fragile flower from a distance, but admires the grandeur of architecture up close.
The Church of the Archangel Michael, built by the Cossacks in 1868 and restored after the war.
We will walk along Mahmud Esambayev Avenue, visit the memorial complex "Alley of Glory".

Day 7 - Alagir gorge — Tsey — hike to the Tsey glacier — Biragzang
Program of the day: Vladikavkaz – Uastyrdzhi Sanctuary and rock monument – Tsey gorge – hike along the eco-trail to the Tsey glacier – picnic lunch (extra charge) - Afsati monument – Biragzang thermal complex.
It starts at 08:30.
Moving along the Military Ossetian road in the Alagir gorge, to the right along the way, an extraordinary sculptural composition attracts attention. This is Nykhas Uastyrdzhi, as they call him in Ossetia. This place is a dzuar, a holy place. The sculpture is attached to a rock and weighs 28 tons!
In the Ossetian tradition, George the Victorious is named after Uastyrdzhi, who is also one of the main characters of the Nart epic. Wastirji is the patron saint of men, travelers and warriors. The monument is considered one of the largest equestrian monuments in the world.
On the way we will see the cave and the sanctuary of Sau Baraga (the Black Horseman). The place and the very image of the Black Horseman are shrouded in many legends and beliefs that we have to learn.
The military-Ossetian road has played an important role in the relations between the north and south of the Caucasus since ancient times. The remains of the ancient Alan customs outpost "Zylyn duar" (from Ossetian – Crooked Door) have been preserved in the Kasar gorge.
We will turn from Transkam to the Tseysky Gorge or Tseyskaya horseshoe. The gorge has been sacred to Ossetians for many centuries – the most iconic places of worship and places of power are located here. In the Tseysky gorge there is one of the most famous historical and religious buildings – the ancient Alanian sanctuary of the River.
The entire gorge is a state nature reserve, and the figure of patron saint Afsati at the entrance symbolizes protection for everyone living in this beautiful corner of the Caucasus.
The Tsey Gorge is recognized as a popular place for outdoor activities and has attracted the attention of tourists for a long time.
When you go to the Tseisk Glacier, you can be sure that an unforgettable adventure awaits you. The glacier formed about 150 million years ago. It is one of the largest and lowest-sinking glaciers in the Caucasus.
The glacier descends to a height of 2200 meters above sea level. The length of the Tsey glacier, together with the fir fields, stretches for 9 km, and its total area is 9.7 square kilometers. The main source of its nutrition is the snow of Mount Adai-Hoh.
The hiking route runs along the picturesque banks of the Ceydon River through coniferous and deciduous forests surrounded by rocks.
Monk Mountain is the motionless and stern guardian of Cei. According to legend, the monk decided to capture a golden-horned turk and present his horns as a gift to Wastirji, but he did not keep his word and was turned to stone.
Soon the forest opens up, we find ourselves in an area of alpine meadows and a glacier glistens ahead framed by high mountains. The glacier seems to be breathing, constantly making noise and living its own life.
We will be able to get closer to feel his power and indomitable temper, to feel the natural element. The Ceydon River bursts out of the glacier's icy grotto in a rapid, turbulent stream.

The source is of volcanic origin. The water rises from a depth of 2,300 m and has a temperature of over 40 °C.

Day 8 - Karmadon — Dargavs — Midagraba waterfalls — Kurtatinsky Gorge
Program of the day: Genaldon gorge – Karmadon Gate – Dargava Necropolis – hike to Midagraba waterfalls – picnic lunch (extra charge) – playground and swing overlooking the Fiagdon Valley – Kurta and Tag Tower.
It starts at 08:30.
Karmadon is one of the narrowest and most rugged gorges in Ossetia. The gorge's infamy is associated with the collapse of the Kolka Glacier in 2002. As a result of the collapse, residents of the gorge and the film crew of Sergei Bodrov died.
Transfer to Dargava Valley. The Dargava necropolis, popularly called the "City of the Dead", consists of more than 90 crypt structures of original shape. Watchtowers of the 16th and 17th centuries.
Our main goal today is the Midagraba Waterfalls. The Midagraba Valley deserves special admiration. A large amount of bright vegetation along with the huge mountains create an incredible and breathtaking landscape.
Gradually, the valley turns into a gorge, which ends with a large stone wall in a natural horseshoe of steep cliffs. There are three glaciers hiding behind the stone barrier of the rocks – Donjety, Jimara and Zeigalan. They are the ones that give life to incredible streams that form several impressive waterfalls.
The unique creations of nature descend from an incredible height and give the impression of falling from the sky. There are eight of the most famous Midagraba cascades: Zeigalan, Takhkadon, four Crystal and two Green.
The main waterfall of the Midagraba valley is Bolshoy Zeigalan. The waterfall's height of 750 meters is the largest waterfall in Ossetia and one of the highest in Europe.
Zeigalan is very powerful, therefore, together with the icy spray, it carries large stones, as well as fragments of a glacier.
The panorama of the Midagraba horseshoe with streams cascading from the slopes is truly a fantastic sight! The peak activity of the waterfalls falls in June-September. They are especially full of water at this time.

Next, we head towards the Kurtatinsky gorge to the observation deck of the Fiagdon valley. A distinctive attraction of this place is the "swing over the abyss" with a panoramic view of the Valley!
Going further down into the valley, we will make a stop at the legendary Tower of Kurta and Tag. The tower is the beginning of ancestral settlements and the cradle of the Ossetian people, a place of worship for the founders of the Kurtatian and Tagaur societies.
From generation to generation, people pass on the legend of the tower and its inhabitants. And we will definitely find out this story on our next tour of the Kurtatinsky gorge.

Day 9 - Kurtatinsky gorge — Upper Fiagdon — Archon pass. Departure

The Kurtatinsky gorge is located in the very center of mountainous Ossetia. To this day, ancient Ossetian villages with family, military, residential and signal towers, cave fortifications, and religious buildings have been preserved here.
The gorge has been one of the main centers of formation of the Ossetian people and national culture since the early Middle Ages. The Kurtatinsky gorge is often called the "land of sleds". The Narts are the legendary people of the Caucasus, the heroes of the ancient epic, the ancestors of the mountain Ossetian societies.
Kadargavan Canyon. A unique place where you can see how, over hundreds of years, a mountain river has eroded the soft limestones of a rocky ridge, and a huge boulder that fell from the mountain has become a natural bridge over the canyon.
Dzivgis rock fortress. The fortress dates back to the time of the invasion of Tamerlane, that is, around the 15th century. An amazing tactical contraption created by the highlanders to protect them from enemy raids.
We will continue to get acquainted with the history of Ossetia and go on a hike to the tower complexes of ancient villages. The architectural monument of the Middle Ages is the city of Tsmiti (Tsymyti), founded in the early 14th century. Its founder is considered to be Tsymyti, the military commander of the last Alan king Os-Bagatar.
Cmiti was a large city, the trade and economic center of Alanya. Exploring the ruins, we will learn a lot of interesting things from the history of these places, we will see dozens of architectural monuments.: crypts, battle towers, and ruins of residential buildings.
Tsmiti is a real open–air museum, included in the list of objects of historical and cultural heritage of federal (all-Russian) significance.
Hike to the tower complexes of the villages: Lats, Kadat, Urykau. Among the objects of this complex of ancient villages are galuans (fortified complexes), ganakhs (house–fortress), ancestral family towers, sanctuaries, above-ground, semi-underground and underground crypts, an underground burial ground, as well as commemorative steles and pillars.
The cultural heritage site "Nartovsky Nykhas" is located on the territory of the village of Lats. Nyhas (oset. - word, speech) – a place where elders gather, discuss, and speak, where they "kept the word."
We will reach the famous bench with the inscription "happiness is just around the corner, it is in the mountains", located on the observation deck at the Archon Pass.
Until recently, few people knew about this place, but today sometimes you have to take a queue to take a photo on the already famous bench. From an altitude of 2,300 meters above sea level, there are unreal views with a panorama of the entire Caucasus Range!
On the way back, while descending into the valley, we will visit the most mountainous in Russia, the Holy Dormition Alan Monastery. Pilgrims come here from all over the south of Russia. The monastery has an amazing, though not so long-standing history, which we have to learn.
Let's get acquainted with the Fiagdon monuments. At the monument to the Grieving Horse, let us recall the soldiers of the Kurtatians who gave their lives for their Homeland in the Great Patriotic War. We will also see the world's first monument to Lenin and a bust of Stalin.

Double (DBL) — a double room (one double bed).

Triple — for triple accommodation, hotels/campsites along the route provide DBL/TWN + extras. a bed or sofa, or three separate beds (depending on the hotel's facilities).

The tourist complex is located on the territory of the Verkhny Gunib Nature Park.

The hotel offers single, double and triple rooms of luxury, semi-luxury and economy class categories. The rooms are equipped with comfortable and beautiful furniture, all necessary appliances, and Wi-Fi access.

The cafe of the campsite offers national Dagestani dishes – khinkal, chudu, kurze, pilaf, shish kebab. Guests can also use the services of the gym, sports grounds, billiards.

group transfers from Makhachkala airport and railway station on the first day of the tour upon arrival;
16:30 group transfer to Vladikavkaz airport and railway station upon departure on the final day of the tour for flights/trains later than 18:00;
accommodation according to the program in hotels/tourist complexes in Guniba/Grozny/Vladikavkaz;
guided tours and hikes according to the program with professional tour guides and qualified drivers;
entrance tickets to the objects of visits according to the program of excursions, environmental fees of nature reserves;

air and railway tickets to Makhachkala and back from Vladikavkaz;
tickets for attractions not included in the tour program (price may vary): a boat trip along the Chirkeysky reservoir – 600 rubles, the Nokhyo cave complex – 700 rubles.;
ticket to Biragzang thermal complex - 600 rub.;
the resort fee or tax is paid independently upon check-in at the hotel;

I would especially like to highlight the excellent organization of the tour. Everything was arranged at the highest level: comfortable minibus transfers, well-located hotels, precise scheduling, and great attention to detail. I was particularly impressed that we traveled through Dagestan and Chechnya during the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims observe strict fasting. Because of this, many cafés and restaurants were closed during the day, and even some grocery stores were not operating. Nevertheless, this did not prevent us from discovering the delicious Caucasian cuisine, hearty breakfasts and lunches were organized for us everywhere we went. I would also like to thank our guides for their courtesy, punctuality, and the fascinating way they introduced us to the culture and traditions of the peoples of the Caucasus.

A huge thank you to the providers and the entire team!!!! 🤝👍 My husband and I went on a weekend tour to North Ossetia, and we absolutely loved it. I completely fell in love with the mountains ❤️ the scenery was so breathtaking it literally made my head spin. It’s unbelievably beautiful there 😍!!:) The trip lasted 4 days : the first day included a sightseeing tour, followed by three days in the mountains with skiing, snowboarding, and visits to the thermal springs. Everything was pleasant and well organized right from the booking stage. All of our additional questions were answered in great detail, everything was honest and transparent :) which is really important :D You can tell that everything has been carefully thought out: the service was attentive without being intrusive, and everyone involved was genuinely friendly and passionate about their work!:) We will definitely travel with “Big Country” again!!
