The Commander Islands Nature Reserve is the largest marine reserve in Russia, its area can be compared with the territory of Belgium.

It is a land of winds, mists and a unique variety of flora and fauna. The green hills here are replaced by rocks, the tundra by sandy dunes for many kilometers, the stormy waters of the ocean by quiet coves, the noise of whale fountains by the splash of killer whales and dolphins.

We will spend four of the eleven days of our trip on the Commodores, exploring them during trekking and sea trips on rubber boats. We'll see giant pinniped rookeries and bird markets, and we'll meet whales.

The cruise also includes a visit to the windiest place in Russia, exploring the Far Eastern fjords, a visit to the national Chukchi village and the best fishing in Kamchatka.

Tour highlights

Bird Market is a record holder

We will walk along the end point of the Anadyr Bay – Cape Navarin, a place rich in winds and storms, serving as a haven for more than a million birds.

Pinniped rookeries

We will find a huge accumulation of pinnipeds: sea lions and Steineger seals live next to seals and sea otters, and each species has its own habits.

The business card of the archipelago

Itinerary

Day 1 - The journey begins
We will meet at the port of Anadyr and take cabins on the Professor Khromov.
Departure from the port at 14:00.
A welcome lunch will be served immediately after sailing to the open sea.
Don't forget to look out the portholes or over the side of the ship: already in the Anadyr Estuary, we are 100% likely to see mysterious milky-marbled belugas.

Day 2 - Cape Navarin
We sail along the western shore of the Anadyr Bay to its final point — Cape Navarin. This place is officially considered the windiest and most storm-prone in Russia.
And the majestic cape, 500 m above sea level— serves as a haven for more than a million birds.
This record-breaking bird bazaar will greet us with endless hubbub and fluttering of its inhabitants over the adjacent cape kekurami.
If we're lucky, we'll see a red-book white-tailed eagle.
It is worth looking at the water: it is common to meet whales at Navarin.
In the second half, we will find the national Chukchi village with the difficult-to-pronounce name Mainypilgyno (you don't need to remember, because even the locals just call it Maina).
Geography has allowed itself a quirk here: the Maina is located between two lakes and is separated from the Bering Sea by a river connecting the lakes and a spit, through a single "gap" in which the river flows into the sea.
Did you manage to imagine? If not, look at the map. The Maina lives by fishing, and there is an interesting museum of Chukchi culture and everyday life. This tiny village is also a subject of interest to ornithologists from all over the world.
In its vicinity, the largest population of sandpiper spends the summer, a rare species numbering only a few hundred individuals and on the verge of extinction.
The shovels have a shovel-like beak shape and migrate 8,000 km from the Russian Far East to Southeast Asia every year.
To ensure that adult shoulder blades produce more offspring, and barely hatched babies survive better, a special incubator has been created near the Lane.

Day 3 - Pavel Bay
Pavel Bay is a fabulous Far Eastern fjord.
It is long and narrow, gently curved and surrounded by high green hills.
We will explore it with taste on rubber Zodiac boats, sailing up to the Pacific walrus rookeries and seabird colonies.
Pavel Bay is located next to it, and the island of the Theologian closes the biblical theme — a picturesque rock located exactly between the entrances to the "apostolic" bays.
If we have the time and desire, we will swim here. Be careful: on the shores of both bays and the island, you can often find brown bears, delicious to the local fish.
After a long walk in the afternoon, Professor Khromov will approach another incredibly beautiful fjord, which is considered a lagoon due to the fact that it is separated from the sea by a sandy spit.
There is an island in the center of Tintikun Lagoon, and right a few meters from the water there are Gowen hot springs. After a walk around the lagoon on the Zodiacs, we will definitely warm up in them.

Day 4 - The beginning of the transition to Commanders
We take a southerly direction and go to the Commander Islands.
Outside the window is the vast Bering Sea with whales and rare seabirds.
You can turn these two days into a meditative observation of the water element, or you can spend them in soulful conversations with other members of the expedition.

Day 6 - Commander Islands
From the 6th to the 9th days of the cruise, we will explore the Commander Islands.
Among the residents of the Commander Islands, there are those who came here for a while and decided to stay forever. But even if parting with the mainland does not appeal to you, this archipelago between the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean will pierce you to the very heart.
In 4 days we will try to see all its main wonders.
Komandory consists of four islands: Bering Island (which accounts for 90% of the total area of the archipelago, and is home to the only settlement with less than 700 inhabitants), Medny Island, and the very small islands of Toporkov and Ariy Kamen.
This entire land area, along with the water area that exceeds it tenfold in size, is part of the national park of the same name. His pride is the highest diversity of marine mammals in Russia.
So, on the largest rookery of Bering Island, we will find a huge concentration of pinnipeds: sea lions and Steineger seals live next to seals and sea otters, and each species has its own habits.
Sailing on the Zodiac along the coast, we will meet a variety of cetaceans: we may come across a sperm whale, an orca, a fin whale, a humpback whale, a porpoise, and many others.
In total, about a million birds constantly nest on the Commander Islands, and the main bird markets are on the islands of Toporkov and Ariy Kamen. Hatchets, which are sometimes called "sea parrots" for their large orange beak, dig holes to hatch their offspring.
Therefore, when walking along the island named after these birds, tread carefully: your foot may fall through.
On the large islands, you can find local blue Arctic foxes and imported reindeer.
A distinctive feature of the Commander is sand dunes, sometimes many kilometers long.
There are many waterfalls on the mountainous island of Medny. And on the island of Bering, which is more diverse in terms of landscape, there is a visiting card of the archipelago — the Steller Arch, a stone remnant in the form of a man-made triumphal arch.
Georg Steller, a physician and natural scientist, participated in the expedition of Commander Vitus Bering to the shores of Alaska. On their way back in late November, their ship was stranded on an unknown island. The commander, who was already ill by that time, died during a difficult winter.
Subsequently, an island was named after him (Bering's grave is still one of the local attractions today), and his title gave the archipelago its name.
We will also visit the Aleutian Museum of Local Lore on Bering Island, look for gems on the beach, and in the tundra for princesses and vodyanika.
Day 7 - Commander Islands
We are actively exploring the 4 islands of the archipelago.
Day 8 - Commander Islands
We get acquainted with the unique flora and fauna of the Commander Islands.
Day 9 - Commander Islands
We will learn a lot about the Commanders, the way of life of the local population and about the lives of great explorers, whose names are forever associated with the archipelago.
Day 10 - Mouth of Zhupanov
Goodbye, Commanders! Hello, Kamchatka!
Moving southwest, Professor Khromov will stop near the mouth of the Zhupanova River.
It is believed that this is the best place for fishing on the Kamchatka Peninsula. On the Zodiac, we will explore the lower, calm part of the river and uncover the spinning rods.
Target number one is the mikizha, aka rainbow trout, whose weight can reach 6-8 kg. But other local fish can also get hooked: pink salmon, coho salmon, chum salmon, sockeye salmon, grayling or char.
Somewhere in the neighborhood, a Kamchatka brown bear can fish, and in the sky — if you're lucky — you can spot a white-winged eagle.
It is one of the largest birds on the planet, with a wingspan of up to 2.5 m.
Day 11 - Completion of the expedition
We will spend this day at sea on a long voyage to the shores of Kamchatka.
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is located on the shore of Avacha Bay, the largest natural harbor in the world.
The expedition is completed.

It's important to know

Most of the routes pass through Primorsky Krai, Sakhalin Oblast and Kamchatka Krai, which are characterized by a temperate climate with a predominance of monsoons.

Average August is from +20°C (in the south) to +15°C (in the north); precipitation: on the plains — about 600 mm per year, in the mountains — up to 1200 mm per year.

Alcohol. Alcohol consumption is prohibited during the active part of the route (disembarkation, excursions).

If a participant is found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the organizers have the right to refuse the tourist to participate in the program.

Alcohol is not in the diet. If you need alcohol, it can be purchased at the ship's bar.

Smoking. Smoking is prohibited in the premises and public areas of the ship. Smoking is allowed only in designated areas. On the route, smoking is allowed only at a distance from the main group, without causing inconvenience to the rest of the group. On most landings and excursions, the routes take place in the protected area of the reserve, so it is forbidden to throw away cigarette butts. If you smoke during the day, take care of a pocket ashtray in advance. Serious fines are provided for clogging the nature protection area.
