Visit to the 19th lock of the White Sea-Baltic Canal.

On the instructions of I. V. Stalin, the 227 km long canal was built in twenty months — from September 1931 to April 1933. 19 locks, 15 dams, 12 spillways, 49 dams — so many hydraulic structures were erected by prisoners without the help of machines and attracted currency.

The country was faced with the task of building a waterway from the Baltic to the North and to the Volga. Connect the Black Sea with the Caspian Sea. Stalin himself mapped out the route of the canal, indicating its starting and ending points, practically repeating the path of Peter the Great — the Osudarev Road.

It appeared in 1937 in connection with the relocation of repair shops from Toros Island to the mouth of Varyazhsky Creek, where a water intake for tugboats and small vessels had already been built. Origin of the name: the name goes back to the legends of Barlaam (Abraham) Keretsky, a priest of the XVI century, who, according to legend, drove the devil from the nearby rock of Abram-pakhty.

There is a memorial complex with a park area on the outskirts of the neighborhood. It is dedicated to the soldiers of the 1st Air Defense Corps, which defended Murmansk from German air raids.

The complex has aircraft installed: a fighter aircraft from the Great Patriotic War Yak-3, as well as a jet fighter-interceptor Su-15.
