On the instructions of I. V. Stalin, the 227 km long canal was built in twenty months — from September 1931 to April 1933. 19 locks, 15 dams, 12 spillways, 49 dams — so many hydraulic structures were erected by prisoners without the help of machines and attracted currency.
The country was faced with the task of building a waterway from the Baltic to the North and to the Volga. Connect the Black Sea with the Caspian Sea. Stalin himself mapped out the route of the canal, indicating its starting and ending points, practically repeating the path of Peter the Great — the Osudarev Road.

Excursion to the Karelian Front Museum, the youngest and most modern museum of the Republic of Karelia.
The museum is located in a historic building that housed the Headquarters of the Karelian Front during the Great Patriotic War.
