To the east of Europe. Yamal Expedition

Our route "To the East of Europe" is recommended by the Russian Geographical Society.

We invite you to join one of the most beautiful trips – a multi-day expedition through the territory of the Ingilor Nature Park, which is called the pearl of the Polar Urals.

We will visit the easternmost point of continental Europe (Ngodyakha Mountain, 793 m).  It is located far from civilization, in an area with unique natural monuments and untouched nature.

We will see the most beautiful lakes: Khadataengalor and Bolshoe Shchuchye (also called Yamal Baikal), visit nomad camps, climb IGAN glacier (the largest glacier in the Polar Urals), see a waterfall in the Jade Valley and feel the full power of the Ural Mountains.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Exploring Salekhard, the only city on the Arctic Circle

08:00 We will meet you at Salekhard airport.

08:45 On the way from the airport, we stop at the 66th Parallel stele, hold a solemn ceremony of crossing the Arctic Circle with the presentation of personalized certificates and take unique photos.

The 66th Parallel stele is a geographical feature of the city, it is located just where the Arctic Circle passes. It was first installed in 1980 in a completely different part of the city, but in 2003 the error was sorted out.

Employees of the geological and geodetic supervision of Salekhard were invited to determine the correct line of the Arctic circle. The monument was dismantled and installed near the Airport-Salekhard highway. Now everything is accurate!

09:30 We check into the hotel "Arctic" 3* in the historical part of the city. Relax after the flight or take a walk.

There are many good restaurants near the hotel. We will definitely tell you where you can have a delicious lunch.

14:15-15:45 We begin our acquaintance with a sightseeing tour of Salekhard.

    What to watch:

    1. Obdorsky prison (under reconstruction until 2027). We will take a walk through the architectural complex under the open sky, repeating the appearance of the ancient fortress. The complex is new, but built using traditional technology without a single nail. Obdorsky prison marked the beginning of modern Salekhard and at the time of its foundation in 1593 was the northernmost in Siberia. Let's look at the harsh life of the 16th century, climb to the observation deck, look at the watchtowers and look into the forge.
    2. The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. We will visit the only functioning 19th century temple in the city and the district. This is the world's first stone Orthodox church, built on permafrost in 1894. It had a difficult fate, it was partially destroyed, but restored to its former glory in 1998.
    3. An open-air museum of polar aviation and a monument to the aviators of the Far North. We will see an unusual museum of small northern aviation with real airplanes and helicopters that flew from the 50s to the 90s. Few of us managed to meet such in everyday life, so their inspection will be interesting for both children and adults.
    4. The stele of the "Romantics of the 70s" is a symbol of the development of the North in the 60-70s of the XX century, when Komsomol members from different parts of the Soviet Union came here to explore and raise the northern territories. And this could only be done by people with a burning heart, an iron will, faith in themselves and others – real romantics. Let's look at the stele, look for a drilling rig and a gas torch in its outlines, maybe we'll argue, find out the story and, of course, take a picture.
    5. The objects of the 501st construction site during the GULAG. Let's take a look at one of the dark pages of our history. Part of the "road to nowhere" – the section of the Chum–Salekhard–Igarka railway - passed through Salekhard. We will visit the memorial dedicated to the victims of repression.

16:00-17:00 We go to the I. S. Shemanovsky Museum and Exhibition Complex. The first and largest museum in Yamal holds a unique exhibit — the remains of a baby mammoth Lyuba, found in 2007.

The permafrost has completely preserved the skin, trunk, all other parts of the body, and even the contents of the mammalian stomach. The discovery became a sensation for the entire scientific world!

In addition, in the museum we will look at unique products made of clay, bone, metal, stone, organic materials (wood, birch bark, leather, etc.), illustrating the daily life of people in the North from the Mesolithic era (6th millennium BC) to Modern times (XVI–XIX centuries) and a large ethnographic collection..

All the guests of Yamal are happy to visit this museum, because it is completely different from the usual city museums. That is why we always include his visit in our programs.

17:00 Return to the hotel and free time to discuss impressions, relax and have a delicious dinner at one of the restaurants in the city. We will give you all the appearances and passwords to make the evening a success.
