Itinerary

Day 1 - Flight from Cape Town to Antarctica
The flight from Cape Town to Antarctica will take about 5.5 hours on the legendary IL-76 aircraft.
All our expeditions take place aboard Ultima Antarctic Logistics flights, which serve the scientific research programs of several countries in Antarctica.
After landing on the ice runway of Novo Airbase, you will immediately go to the camp.
Located about 12 km (30 minutes drive from Novo Airbase), Ultima Oasis Camp is an oasis of comfort, cozy warmth and excellent service.
The first thing that catches your eye after arriving at the camp is the magnificent views to the east, to the sheltered ice valley and the pristine lake under the amphitheater of rocky nunataks.
A small group of like-minded people, with a maximum of 8 guests and 2 guides, creates an extraordinary polar adventure among the beautiful, protected oasis of Schirmacher, where our camp is located.
Day 2 - The colony of Emperor Penguins and the Land of Queen Maud
From the second to the eighth day of the tour, you will explore the colony of Emperor penguins and the Land of Queen Maud.
The description of each of these days applies equally to the other six days.
Our main goals of this expedition are to visit the newly discovered colonies of emperor penguins Astrid and Northern Lazarev, as well as the Drygalksi Mountains (where the magnificent peaks of Ulvetanna and Holtanna are located).

This adventure in the depths of the Antarctic continent is an untrodden path, a true adventure of a lifetime, and in 2025 it will be limited to just three groups of 8 people.
Your companion will be our partner in adventure, the founder of Islands & Ice Travel is David Sinclair, who has been leading and conducting trips to Antarctica for almost two decades.

Day 5 - The colony of Emperor Penguins and the Land of Queen Maud
Closer to the Ultima Oasis Camp, we will visit stunning ice formations, including the unusual neon blue ice tunnel in the Lazarev Ice Shelf, as well as enjoy short walks to admire the stunning views of the nearby ice shelf.
Day 6 - The colony of Emperor Penguins and the Land of Queen Maud
You will be accompanied by award—winning photographer and Antarctic conservationist David Sinclair as you explore the Emperor Penguin colonies and the mountains of Queen Maud Land.
After the flight, a short walk will take us to the largest of all penguins on Earth, reaching 122 cm in height and 40 kg in weight, the size of a small person.
The colony consists of fluffy chicks waiting for their parents to return from the ocean with fresh food, couples reuniting with each other and cuddling up to each other for warmth or occasionally basking in the Antarctic sun.

Day 7 - The colony of Emperor Penguins and the Land of Queen Maud
Our second main goal on this trip is to fly southwest on a Twin Otter to the spectacular Drygaslki Mountains bordering the Fenristungu Glacier.
The sheer northern wall of Ulvetanna rises above the ice.
Day 8 - The colony of Emperor Penguins and the Land of Queen Maud
The western wall of Holtanna, illuminated by the late evening light, is an incredible place.
We will land in several locations around these impressive peaks to take beautiful pictures and experience the true grandeur and privacy of this very special place.
Day 9 - Flight from Antarctica to Cape Town
We will return to Novo airstrip for the return flight to Cape Town.
Please note that all flights depend on the weather conditions in Antarctica.

Ultima Oasis Camp consists of three beautifully furnished wooden cabins with rooms of different categories that can accommodate couples, families or groups, depending on your preferences and availability.

The bathrooms are shared by all rooms and are kept in immaculate condition.

A separate room for the dining area and living room will be an excellent place for joint dinners and evening conversations over a glass of the best South African wines.

The panoramic bay windows constantly beckon with magnificent views, illuminated by the never-setting sun, while you relax and recover from the day's adventures.

The camp's dedicated chef and service assistants will surprise you with their prepared masterpieces every day.

The meals are prepared according to dietary requirements and will be accompanied by an assortment of carefully selected South African wines and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, including tea and freshly ground coffee.

It's important to know

Our winter sportswear is well suited to the climatic conditions during most of our travels. Thermal underwear, wind and waterproof clothing, and rubber boots will become a reliable foundation for your comfort in the polar regions.

Layering in clothing is the most important thing in Arctic expeditions. It is better to wear several light garments than one very warm one. This will help you optimally adapt to temperature changes: it is always easier to take off a layer of clothing if you feel hot, or put on something else if it gets chilly.

The base layer. Choose thermal underwear made of merino wool or polypropylene, depending on the temperature of the region and the planned activity level.
The middle layer. Wool or fleece sweaters, longsleeves, turtlenecks to create layers of clothing. The middle layers can be worn under a parka.
The top layer. Windproof and waterproof parka and trousers. The park can be single-layered (insulated with protection from wind and water) or double-layered (consisting of a warm layer and an upper wind and water protection layer).
Shoes and accessories. Rubber boots (regular or insulated) are the most suitable option for expeditions. Bring several pairs of gloves/mittens (1 light, 1 warm waterproof, 1 spare), a hat, scarf/ buff, several pairs of warm (for example, wool) and regular socks.
