Flight to the South Pole

Welcome to an exciting journey to the South Pole!

Here you will plunge into the spirit of one of the most famous stories in Antarctic exploration – the fierce competition between Scott and Amundsen for the right to be the first to reach the South Pole. More than a hundred years have passed since then, but interest in Antarctica has not faded, but on the contrary, has increased.

You will stay at the cozy Union Glacier Camp, where you will take a walk and see how difficult life is in Antarctica, go to conquer the South Pole, talk with the scientists of the Amundsen-Scott station and get a lot of unforgettable impressions.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Flight to Antarctica

Please note! It is necessary to arrive in Punta Arenas two days before the scheduled flight to Antarctica.

The day before the flight, in the morning you will be invited to a presentation about Antarctica and a story about Air Cruise.

The presentation includes information about your flight by plane to Antarctica to the South Pole, the current weather situation, as well as what awaits you upon arrival in Antarctica. This will be the journey of your life, and we want to make sure that you are well prepared to enjoy it to the fullest.

On the first day of the tour, we will meet you at the hotel in the morning. If the weather is suitable for our flight to Union Glacier Camp, you will be given no more than an hour to pack, and a group bus will pick you up from the hotel. At the airport, you will be checked, including scanning of all hand luggage.

The flight time from Punta Arenas to Union Glacier Camp is approximately 4.5 hours.

First, we will fly over Tierra del Fuego, then fly through the Drake Strait, which is known for its strong winds and storms.

At about 60 we will reach the Antarctic Convergence zone, from now on we are in the area where the Antarctic Convention operates.

At 66 we will cross the Southern Arctic Circle. This is a place where the sun never sets during the polar day, and during the polar night it is constantly dark. Continuing our flight south, weather permitting and low clouds, we will observe icebergs and ice shelves.

The plane to Antarctica will land on the ice sheet.

Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed and will go to our camp, which is located about 1 km from the strip.

The expedition staff will show you your accommodation and invite you to a welcome lunch.

In heated tents for two people, you will be provided with a cot, an insulating mat, a sleeping bag and bed linen.

You will take a walk around the camp and see how difficult life is in Antarctica.

The rest of the day will be more peaceful so that you can acclimatize.

It's important to know

Personal equipment you need for the tour

Our winter sportswear is well suited to the climatic conditions during most of our travels. Thermal underwear, wind and waterproof clothing, and rubber boots will become a reliable foundation for your comfort in the polar regions.

Layering in clothing is the most important thing in Arctic expeditions. It is better to wear several light garments than one very warm one. This will help you optimally adapt to temperature changes: it is always easier to take off a layer of clothing if you feel hot, or put on something else if it gets chilly.

  1. The base layer. Choose thermal underwear made of merino wool or polypropylene, depending on the temperature of the region and the planned activity level.
  2. The middle layer. Wool or fleece sweaters, longsleeves, turtlenecks to create layers of clothing. The middle layers can be worn under a parka.
  3. The top layer. Windproof and waterproof parka and trousers. The park can be single-layered (insulated with protection from wind and water) or double-layered (consisting of a warm layer and an upper wind and water protection layer).
  4. Shoes and accessories. Rubber boots (regular or insulated) are the most suitable option for expeditions. Bring several pairs of gloves/mittens (1 light, 1 warm waterproof, 1 spare), a hat, scarf/ buff, several pairs of warm (for example, wool) and regular socks.
