A great journey through Dagestan

Khunzakh district is the birthplace of Hadji Murad— the hero of Leo Tolstoy's novel. A monument to both is installed in a picturesque place called Matlas.

Here, from a height of 1,700 m, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the valley, dotted with small mountain villages, next to which sheep graze peacefully.

Inspired by the views, you will go to lunch, where dishes of traditional Avar cuisine will be presented.

The Khunzakh highland plateau is the most extensive in Dagestan. It is the birthplace of great warriors and poets.

The Tsolotlinsky Canyon, located at the foot of the 19th century fortress, impresses with its scope. You will walk along the very edge, to the sound of the Tobot and Itlyatlyar waterfalls falling to the bottom of the canyon.

Breakfast. Room release. Today we will continue to explore mountainous Dagestan and get acquainted with the traditions of the Avar people.

Gamsutl is a famous abandoned village located at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level. It is full of legends and tall tales, and among the cluster of deserted houses of the "Dagestani Machu Picchu" only the wind and brave tourists wander here.

Rocky mountains, man-made terraces and the traditional architecture of the village will immerse us in the atmosphere of the mountain people's way of life.

We will descend to Gamsutl from the top of the village of Sogratl, an ancient settlement in the Gunib district, historically known as the center of Andalal or the Andalal Free Society.

Sogratl is located among the mountains of the Nukatl range above the valley of the Tsamtichai River. During the ascent to the top, you will enjoy views of the famous Sedlo and Mayak mountains.

At lunch, we will have familiar Avar national dishes: khinkal, botishal and apricot porridge.

Next, we will visit the village of Gunib, whose past is inextricably linked with the name of Imam Shamil and the end of the Caucasian War.

The Museum of Local Lore will introduce us to the history of the village and the way of life of its inhabitants. Maximum immersion in culture can be achieved by trying on the traditional costumes of the peoples of Dagestan from the museum's collection.

After a day full of the beauty of nature in the Gunibsky district, we set off for the southernmost city in Russia. Accommodation in a hotel in Derbent.

Today you will explore Southern Dagestan, where you will get acquainted with the way of life and traditions of the Tabasaran people.

The first stop will be at the Lun ekranoplane, an ingenious creation of Soviet engineering.

Well-preserved to the present day, preserved for several years in the coastal area of the city of Kaspiysk, it is waiting for the day when it will proudly spread its wings in the center of the Patriot Park under construction.

Next, you will be transferred to the Khuchni center of Tabasaran district and explore its sights. This is the fortress of Seven brothers and one sister, which towers over the village as a symbol of the heroic past of the people.

And the small but picturesque Khanaga waterfall, at the foot of which locals like to relax.

After that, you will have lunch at the ethnocomplex. Here you can participate in a master class on traditional miracle cooking and carpet weaving (included in the price).

Return to the hotel.

Breakfast at the hotel. Room release. We will spend the last day of the tour in Derbent, the southernmost and most ancient city in Russia.

A visit to the Naryn-Kala citadel will reveal to us the ancient history of the fortress, which has protected the city from the invasion of nomads for hundreds of years. Preserved for posterity, it is a symbol of the courage and invincibility of the peoples of the Caucasus.

We will walk through the streets of the old city and visit the Juma Mosque, built in 733. Let's plunge into the culture of the southern peoples of Dagestan and feel the oriental flavor of Derbent.

We conclude our trip with a feast in the ethnodome with dishes of South Dagestan cuisine: dolma, pilaf, chudu and tea drinking.
