Ullu-Tau Mountain Camp. Elbrus region

The Elbrus region has long been famous among tourists for the beauty of its mountain gorges. In one of these places – the gorge of the Adyr-Su river – there is a special mountain, unlike all others. A mountain with its own character, with a special energy. Her name is Ullu-Tau, "Sacred Mountain", "Mother Mountain".

On a hike to Ullu-Tau, we will visit the foot of this sacred mountain, visit the lakes of the Adyr-su gorge, the Devichy Kosy waterfall and ride the lifts of Mount Elbrus. A pleasant moment: this active tour takes place without backpacks, the whole trekking is light. The hike is not difficult, so it is perfect for beginners and parents with children.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Arrival. Verkhny Baksan village – Adyr-Su gorge – Ullu-Tau camp
    • 11:30 Meeting of the group at the railway station in Mineralnye Vody (near the main entrance from the city).
    • 12:00 Gathering of the group at the airport of Mineralnye Vody (near the fountain).

Transfer by minibus to the village of Verkhny Baksan (2.5-3 hours).

Here the usual road ends and ends at a mountain lift.

This is a unique structure where the car is placed on a special platform, which is lifted to a height using a cable along rails.

At this point, the instructor and the tourists walk up the stairs to the entrance to the Adyr-Su gorge, the height difference is 50-60 m (5 minutes walk).

We carry personal items and groceries with us.

If the mountain lift is working, then we lift things on the lift.

In the Adyr-Su gorge, we change the usual minibus to mountain transport.

There are only 12 kilometers left on the mountain road – and we are already in the heart of the mountains.

It is here, at an altitude of 2,380 m, that the highest alpine camp in the North Caucasus, Ullu-Tau, is located.

We will live in this place for the next four days.

It takes 5 minutes to walk from the transport to the campground.

Crossings and border formalities take a lot of time, and we'll be there by evening.

Today we will have time to walk around the camp, near the Adyr-Su River, and at the end of the day we will admire Ullu-Tau Mountain in the sunset rays.

The tent camp is located at an altitude of 2380 m.

The tour was very well organized. The transfers from the airport and railway station to the campsite, as well as from the campsite to the hiking trails, were smooth and convenient. The campsite itself was comfortable, with rooms equipped with showers and TVs. What impressed me the most, however, was the drying room on our floor! The weather in this region changes rapidly, and almost every day, our group got caught in the rain. Drying clothes and shoes while hiking can be a real challenge, back in Altai, after getting soaked in rain and snow, I was never able to fully dry my clothes, as it rained every night, and they only dried once I got home. Here, that problem was completely solved. A special thank you to our guide, Roman, an experienced mountain tour expert, a fascinating and cheerful companion, and undoubtedly a true mountain romantic. He went above and beyond to bring our diverse group together, chatting with everyone during the day and organizing engaging activities in the evenings. He shared captivating stories about his native Krasnoyarsk region, the Sayan Mountains, local customs, and legends, as well as personal anecdotes. Roman carefully selected routes based on the weather and terrain, always prioritizing the safety and well-being of the group. Roma, thank you so much!
