The Curonian Spit National Park is an amazingly wonderful place to relax in nature: the purest sea air filled with pine phytoncides; the greenery of the forest and the chirping of birds; the peace of the dune landscape and the vast expanses of the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon.

The small town of Gumbinnen went down in history during the First World War, when the great Battle of Gumbinnen took place next to it on August 20, 1914.
Stunning monuments by outstanding modern Russian sculptors remind of this tragic time, the battle, and the heroes of the Russian Imperial army: "In Memory of the Forgotten War that changed the Course of History" by M. Shemyakin and "Bayonet Attack" by V. Surovtsev; as well as the memorial church of All Saints in memory of the fallen during the First World War.
During the Second World War, the city will again be inscribed in the annals of significant events: the offensive operation of the 3rd Belorussian Front on the territory of Nazi Germany, the Gumbinnen Breakthrough, will be named after the city.
You will learn about the two wars and the history of the city in general at the Museum of Local Lore, one of the best museums not only in our region, but also in the country. Many guests say this: it was worth going to this city just for the sake of this wonderful museum!
The city itself will delight your eyes with its beautiful ancient architecture: the majestic building of the District Government on the main square, next to the delicate neo-Gothic building of the national Bank, the strict Lutheran Salzburg Church (church).
And, of course, the symbols of the city: the present—day monument to the hero of the Soviet Union, Captain S.I. Gusev, whose name the city proudly bears, and the past — the sculpture of a bronze moose by the talented German sculptor L. Vordermayer.

The city of Baltiysk is a seaside, port city, naval base of the Baltic Fleet. All this determines the flavor and spirit of the place.
You will have the opportunity to walk along the embankment in the historical part of Baltiysk, where ships are moored; see the oldest operating lighthouse in the Kaliningrad region (1816); monument to Peter I— the founder of the Baltic Fleet.
The Russian tsar visited here, including the Swedish Fortress, which he later modeled on the Peter and Paul Fortress when founding the northern capital.
The building of the old Reformed church, which has now become St. George's Naval Cathedral of the Baltic Fleet, has been preserved.

In the 19th century, the city of Tilsit hosted a meeting of the rulers of three states, which summed up the first stage of the Napoleonic wars and determined the policies of several important European countries at once.
You will learn about this event at the Tilsit World Museum: You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in that era with its tastes and fashion, get to know in detail the personalities of the Russian Emperor Alexander I, the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and the royal couple of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm III and his charming wife, Queen Louise.
An elegant monument was erected in the Jacobsruhe city park in honor of the "queen of hearts". On the centenary of this event, described in Leo Tolstoy's famous novel War and Peace, the Queen Louise Bridge was built over the Neman River. The house where the Russian emperor lived during the days of peace has been preserved in the city.

The history of the founding and development of the cities of the state of the Teutonic Order is interesting and differs from our Russian cities. And the cities themselves have a unique flavor.
The magnificent 14th-century Gothic church of St. George with stunning star-shaped vaults has been preserved in the city of Pravdinsk.
Next to the temple there is a memorial sign in honor of the St. George's Cross, an honorary award of the tsarist times, established after the Battle of Friedland (June 14, 1807).
Russian russians recall this battle during the Napoleonic Wars with the participation of the Russian army. The monument on the grave of the heroic General N. Mazovsky in the city park, a memorial plaque on the hospital building, near the walls of which Russian soldiers who died of wounds were buried, and a commemorative obelisk in the city park.
The village of Zheleznodorozhny has preserved a charming half-timbered building, popular in the Middle Ages in some Western European countries.

The "Tourist" Hotel was excellent. It had everything we needed, and the city center was even within walking distance, about 15-30 minutes depending on your pace. The excursions to the towns around Kaliningrad, especially Zelenogradsk and Yantarny, were absolutely wonderful, really interesting, atmospheric, and enjoyable. I’d especially like to mention our guide, Lyudmila. She was friendly, funny, positive, and had a great sense of humor. Her tours were informative and engaging without overwhelming us with too much information. She explained everything in a simple and memorable way - more like: See this building? Here’s why it looks this way and what makes it special. That style made the excursions especially enjoyable. To be honest, the castle tours in Kaliningrad itself were a bit less interesting, since many of the castles are now partly in ruins.
