Velimir Khlebnikov is a poet, novelist, founder of Russian futurism and a major figure of Russian avant—gardism. According to Roman Yakobson, he was the greatest world poet of the 20th century.
The birthplace of the greatest poet of the Silver Age is the Kalmyk village of Malye Derbety. It was there (October 26, Old style) that Viktor Khlebnikov (the real name of the writer) was born on November 9, 1885, and became the third child of Vladimir and Ekaterina Khlebnikov.
Vladimir Khlebnikov's father belonged to an ancient merchant family, was an ornithologist and forester, and founded the Astrakhan Nature Reserve, the first in the Soviet Union. Thanks to him, Victor fell in love with nature and became interested in natural sciences.

According to legend, far to the north there is a pure land inhabited by the gods, the land of Shambhala, invisible to the human eye.
Once upon a time, the goddesses — Green Tara and White Tara — were on their way from Shambhala to the land of Zu (Tibet) When they saw a beautiful place in the middle of the steppes in the Dalai Lama's palace, they went down to the green land. Thunder rang out, a rainbow flashed, and the goddesses descended to earth on silver thrones. Where they set foot on the ground, a spring of the purest water gushed, trees and flowers grew.
People, having seen this miracle, called the gelyun, who conducted the "ova takhln" (rite of consecration of the mound). An ova (stone structure) was built at the resting place of the goddesses in honor of this event.
Since then, this area has been called Ovata, which means: "... the place where there is Ova." To this day, as legend has it, the footprint of one of the goddesses has been preserved there: a deep sinkhole in the ground that is beyond the control of time. On October 22, 2000, a Stupa of Enlightenment was built at this place with public donations.

Shakyusn-xume (kalm. Sakusn-sum) is a Buddhist temple in the Republic of Kalmykia. Khurul is located six kilometers from the capital of Kalmykia, near the village of Arshan. The official name of this religious building is "Geden Sheddup Choikorling", which in Tibetan literally means "The Holy monastery of the theory and practice of the Gelug school", and loosely translated — "The Holy Monastery of enlightened monks."
This is the first Buddhist temple built in the republic.
The construction of the temple began in 1992 with donations from residents of Kalmykia and personal funds from the first President of the Republic of Kalmykia, Kirsan Nikolaevich Ilyumzhinov.
The name of this Buddhist center was given by the Dalai Lama XIV during his visit to Kalmykia in September 1992, who consecrated the location of the future temple. Khurul was inaugurated on October 5, 1996.

Day 3 - Mount Shared, traces of the ancient ocean

Day 7 - Big Bogdo Mountain. Baskunchak Lake. The end of the tour in Volgograd

The highest point of the Caspian lowland. It appeared out of the ground, as if from nowhere, and is a huge salt dome covered with ancient clays, sandstones and limestones. Some of the sediments are over 200 million years old.
This is the only mountain in the world whose height, thanks to the salt dome, is steadily increasing.
Surprisingly, the mountain rises on an almost perfectly flat plain — arid, covered with sagebrush-solyanka semi-desert vegetation. The color of the mountain is also unusual, it varies depending on the season and time of day.
Bolshoe Bogdo Mountain is a special, sacred place for the Kalmyk people — a place of power.
According to legend, Mount Bogdo was formed from a sacred stone brought by Kalmyks pilgrims from the distant mountains of the Tien Shan. The mountain is protected from uninvited invasion by the White spirit of Lake Baskunchak, who does not like it when idle people come to him, and drives them away with angry muttering.
Even with moderate air movement at night, there is an indistinct hum that really resembles a murmur. When there is a strong wind, resonating in the voids, the murmur develops into a piercing howl and intermittent whistling.
Lake Baskunchak.
Baskunchak is not a lake, but a continuous layer of salt, having a domed shape and extending its base into the bowels of the earth. The lake is just a small "abrasion" on the top of this salt mountain.
The bottom of the lake is solid salt. There are deposits of medicinal clays on the lake shore. In June and August, tourists come to the lake to swim in the brine and take mud baths.
Therapeutic air with a high content of bromine and phytoncides, sulfide silt mud, similar in action and composition to Dead Sea mud, sodium chloride brine containing a complex of macro- and microelements, contribute to rapid recovery.

Local cuisine that you should definitely try:

MAHAN SHELTYAGAN (hot mutton broth with potatoes, raw onion rings) is the main dish of Kalmyk cuisine, which is obligatory for all holidays of the Kalmyk family. You will enjoy not only the taste of meat, but also the fragrant broth. For its preparation, environmentally friendly mutton is used, which was grown in the Kalmyk steppes and this unique taste is provided by the many grasses of the native land. It is made from large pieces of lamb, potatoes and a generous amount of onions.
