The birthplace of the greatest of the poets of the Silver Age is the Kalmyk village of Malye Derbety. It was there (October 26, old style) that Viktor Khlebnikov (the real name of the writer) was born on November 9, 1885, and became the third child of Vladimir and Ekaterina Khlebnikov.
Father Vladimir Khlebnikov belonged to an ancient merchant family, was an ornithologist and forester, founded the first Astrakhan Nature Reserve in the Soviet Union. Thanks to him, Victor fell in love with nature and became interested in natural sciences.

According to legend, far to the north there is a pure land inhabited by the gods — the country of Shambhala, which is not visible to the human eye.
Once upon a time, the goddesses — Green Tara and White Tara — on their way from Shambhala to the land of Zu (Tibet) When they saw a beautiful place in the middle of the steppes, they went to the Dalai Lama's palace and descended onto the green earth.
Thunder rang, a rainbow flashed, and the goddesses descended to earth on silver thrones. Where they set foot on the ground, a spring of the purest water clogged, trees and flowers grew. When people saw this miracle, they called the Gelyung, who conducted the "ova tukhn" (the rite of consecration of the mound). An ova (stone structure) was built at the resting place of the goddesses in honor of this event.
Since then, this area has been called Ovata, which means: "... a place where there is an Ova." To this day, as the legend says, the footprint of one of the goddesses has been preserved there: a deep sinkhole in the ground, which is beyond the control of time. On October 22, 2000, a Stupa of Enlightenment was built at this place with public donations.

Day 2 - Elista. Syakyusn-Syume Temple, Lonely Poplar, Elista

Syakyusn-syume (kalm. Sakusn-sum) is a Buddhist temple in the Republic of Kalmykia. Khurul is located six kilometers from the capital of Kalmykia, near the village of Arshan.
This is the first Buddhist temple built in the republic.
The construction of the temple began in 1992 with donations from residents of Kalmykia and personal funds of the first President of the Republic of Kalmykia Kirsan Nikolaevich Ilyumzhinov.
The name of this Buddhist center was given by the Dalai Lama XIV during his visit to Kalmykia in September 1992, who consecrated the location of the future temple. Khurul was inaugurated on October 5, 1996.

The "Lonely Poplar" in Kalmykia is a natural monument of national importance. A gigantic tree grows right in the middle of the steppe — five kilometers southwest of the village of Khar Buluk.
The height of the giant poplar is 37 meters, and the girth of the trunk at the level of the human waist is 5 meters. And you can't hug it together! There are simply no such powerful trees in the steppe, so the poplar seems like a real miracle. No wonder a sanctuary has sprung up around him.
According to legend, the tree was planted by the Buddhist monk Purdash-bagshi, who was the abbot of the most revered khurul in the Kalmyk steppes.
Returning from a pilgrimage to Tibet at the beginning of the 20th century, the monk brought with him poplar seeds, which were in the incision of a traveling staff.
The monk planted them on the highest point of the local hill. Soon a thin twig with bright green leaves appeared…
Today, a beautiful panorama of the surrounding area opens from the place where a lonely poplar grows.

It was built in 1818 in honor of the victory of Russia in the Patriotic War of 1812 over Napoleon.
The initiator of the construction was the outstanding military commander Serebjab Tyumen (1774-1848). He led the Second Astrakhan Kalmyk Regiment in the military campaign of 1812-1814. For his military services, he was awarded numerous government awards, among them the Order of St. Anna, 2nd degree, the Order of St. Vladimir, 4th degree with a bow, etc.
The main stone temple (syume) of Khurul partially repeated the Kazan Cathedral in miniature, only in a strange and bizarre mixture of Buddhist Kalmyk architecture and classical Orthodoxy.

Sarai-Batu (Old Sarai) is a medieval settlement on the banks of the Ashuluk River. As a result of archaeological research begun in 1965, it became possible to assert that this area, located almost 150 km from Astrakhan, is the capital of the Golden Horde.
Today's Sarai-Batu open-air museum complex appeared only thanks to unusual luck. Not so long ago, part of the city was restored, the scenery for the filming of the film "Horde" was erected.
After the end of the filming process, they decided to leave the scenery and establish a cultural center on the site of the city. In the very first years of the museum's operation, it became a favorite place for history lovers who want to visit the reconstruction city: walk along stylized streets, look into yurts and hold a photo shoot in historically accurate costumes.
This place has become a kind of Mecca for reenactors. You can explore the territory yourself, but a walk as part of a group tour will be much more interesting and informative.
It should be understood that the decorations of a part of the city are not the true appearance of the Mongolian capital, but rather a generalized image. Nevertheless, the creation of expositions was approached very painstakingly, studying all possible sources.

Day 7 - Big Bogdo Mountain. Baskunchak Lake. The end of the tour in Volgograd

The highest point of the Caspian lowland. It appeared out of the ground, as if from nowhere, and is a huge salt dome covered with ancient clays, sandstones and limestones. Some deposits are over 200 million years old.
This is the only mountain in the world whose height, thanks to the salt dome, is steadily increasing.
Surprisingly, the mountain rises on an almost perfectly flat plain — arid, covered with sagebrush-solyanka semi-desert vegetation. The color of the mountain is also unusual, it varies depending on the season and time of day.
Bolshoe Bogdo Mountain is a special, sacred place for the Kalmyk people — a place of power.
According to legend, Mount Bogdo was formed from a sacred stone brought by Kalmyks-pilgrims from the distant Tien Shan mountains. The mountain is guarded from uninvited intrusion by the White spirit of Lake Baskunchak, who really dislikes when idle people come to him, and drives them away with angry muttering.
Even with moderate air movement at night, an indistinct hum can be heard here, really resembling a murmur. In a strong wind, resonating in the voids, the mumbling turns into a shrill howl and intermittent whistling.
Baskunchak Lake.
Baskunchak is not a lake, but a solid layer of salt, having a domed shape and extending its base into the bowels of the earth. The lake is just a small "abrasion" on the top of this salt mountain.
The bottom of the lake is solid salt. There are deposits of medicinal clays on the shore of the lake. In June and August, tourists come to the lake, who swim in brine and take mud baths.

The winds are always blowing in the steppes, so be sure to bring windproof clothes with you.

Do not forget to take sunscreen, the minimum protection is SPF 20-30, and possibly SPF 50, it all depends on your phototype.

Local cuisine dishes that you definitely need to try:

MAHAN SHELTYAGAN (hot mutton broth with potatoes, raw onion rings) is the main dish of Kalmyk cuisine, which is a must for all holidays of the Kalmyk family. You will enjoy not only the taste of meat, but also the fragrant broth. For its preparation, environmentally friendly mutton is used, which was grown in the Kalmyk steppes and this unique taste is provided by the many grasses of the native land.
