Alakurtti is an ancient Finnish Sami settlement. The name Alakurtti comes from the area where landowner Heinrich Kurtti settled with his family in the middle of the 17th century. His descendants then settled along the right bank of the Tunsayoki River, and accordingly the areas of their settlement were called Yuli-kurtti (Upper Kurtti) and Alakurtti (Lower Kurtti).
There are several other versions of the origin of this word. One of them is that Alakurtti (literal translation) is a lowland valley. The village lives up to its name, it is located in a lowland bordered by high hills.
They protected from the harsh winter winds and created a special microclimate that allowed the first inhabitants of the settlement to conduct economic activities.
