Its owners were Vasily Petrovich and Olga Dmitrievna Sheremetev, descendants of a well—known family.

The castle, designed by the German architect Rudolf Muller in the late Gothic style, also has features of Gothic, Oriental, Romanesque and Old Russian styles.
