There are many beautiful places on the banks of the Mother Volga and in the Nizhny Novgorod region, where the real Russian soul is felt. One of these places is Gorodets, a small provincial town on the high Volga coast. This cute town is the oldest in the Nizhny Novgorod Volga region. The date of its foundation is considered to be 1152. Gorodets is a rare place for travelers in its harmony. The ancient history and beautiful architecture of the ancient merchant city, majestic temples are sure to please you.
On the picturesque bank of the Volga River there is a unique complex "City of Masters", which is recreated in the traditions of Russian wooden architecture of the XVI-XIX centuries and preserves all the diversity of folk arts and crafts of Gorodetsky land. The building is decorated with the pride of Gorodets – a deaf house carving. A large tower with peaked roofs, openwork porches and carved architraves, stylized in the old days, was created by modern craftsmen in the best traditions of local wooden architecture. Wooden lace reproducing ancient patterns adorns gates, galleries, cornices, window shutters.
Once upon a time, folk crafts known all over the world were born in Gorodets - Gorodets painting, gold embroidery, wood carving, pottery and gingerbread making. Modern products in the old way are created in several craft workshops, while the "live" process of making these products can be viewed on an exciting excursion in the City of Masters complex.
The complex is divided into several buildings, each of which represents the architecture of the 16th and 19th centuries. Miracles are happening in the pine walls of the "City of Craftsmen" – the skills of the ancestors continue and new unique handmade products are being created. Craft traditions are highly revered here and carefully preserved, passing them from master to master. Gorodets carefully preserves unique examples of decorative and applied art - wood carving, gold embroidery, hand weaving, etc. Here you can also see carved platbands of blind and slotted carvings, wonderful painted caskets, panels in patchwork technique, gingerbread shapes, a variety of toys made of clay, manholes and bast.
