The picturesque high banks of the Oka and Volga rivers, decorated with green embankments, are literally dotted with colorful domes with crosses rising up. "Look, look, how good it is! Here it is, Father, the Lower One! That's what he is, gods! Churches, look at you, they seem to be flying," Gorky's grandmother exclaimed as they approached Nizhny Novgorod on a motor ship.
This striking view was made possible due to the fact that the historical center of Nizhny Novgorod has largely preserved the ancient temple buildings. From the left bank of the Oka River, you will have a beautiful view of the Annunciation Monastery with its 17th-century domes, but the monastery's history began with the history of Nizhny Novgorod in the 13th century.
On Kupecheskaya Rozhdestvenskaya Street you will see the Stroganov Church, which is sometimes called one of the most beautiful churches in Russia, and this is hardly a big exaggeration. The Stroganov Baroque masterpiece still amazes with its decor and gilded iconostasis 305 years after its construction.
The Voznesensky Caves Monastery with its magnificent 17th-century ensemble will immerse you in the history of Russia and fill you with spiritual power. It was in this monastery that Saints Euthymius of Suzdal and Macarius of Zheltovodsk began their monastic journey.
