A distinctive feature of our expeditions is an informal dress code, but on luxury ships there is an evening dress code during dinner and at official events.
Outerwear must be wind and waterproof. Wool, silk and some synthetic fibers such as fleece retain heat better than cotton.
Avoid getting wet due to precipitation, sea spray or sweating.
Do not bring tight clothing that does not leave room for air space, which serves as an excellent insulator.
Multi-layer clothing is the main rule of equipment for polar expeditions. It is better to wear several lightweight items of clothing than one very warm one. This will help you adapt optimally to changing temperatures: it is always easier to remove a layer of clothing if you feel hot, or put on something else if it gets cold.
Base layer. Select thermal underwear made of polypropylene or merino wool in accordance with the temperature of the region and the planned level of activity.
Middle layer. Wool or fleece sweaters, long sleeves, and turtlenecks make up the middle layers of clothing. They can be worn both under a parka on landings and on board a ship.
Upper layer. Wind and waterproof parka and trousers. The parka can be single-layer (insulated with protection from wind and water) or two-layer (consist of a warm base and an upper wind- and water-proof layer).
Shoes and accessories. Rubber boots (regular or insulated) are the most suitable option for expeditions. Bring several pairs of gloves/mittens (one light, one warm waterproof, one spare), a hat, a scarf/buff, several pairs of warm (eg wool) and regular socks.
