Kizhi is the most fabulous and unusual island of the Russian North, located in one of the largest lakes in Europe, Lake Onega, 68 km from Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia. The Kizhi State Historical, Architectural and Ethnographic Museum-Reserve is located on the island of the same name and adjacent islands, the collection of which includes chapels, peasant houses, many outbuildings (barns, rigas, baths) and other buildings. The foundation of the museum-reserve is the world—famous architectural ensemble of the Kizhi Pogost, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The heart of the architectural ensemble is the grandiose and majestic 22-domed Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, built, according to legend, without a single nail by the local architect Nestor in 1714. According to legend, after the construction, Nestor threw his axe into the waters of Lake Onega and said: "There has never been such a church before and there will never be again!"

With the opening of the Volga-Baltic Canal, this place became known to thousands of people thanks to the ensemble of the Goritsky Voskresensky Convent (1544). In the small village of Goritsy, located on the shore of the Sheksna, 8 km from the city of Kirillov, there is a river pier, from where a bus tour to the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery (1397) begins. The main attraction of Kirillov lies through the unique national park "Russian North". On its territory is Mount Maura, on top of which lies a huge stone. According to legend, the indentation on this stone is the footprint of St. Peter. Kirill Belozersky, the founder of the monastery. The monastery was visited by Russian tsars and noble boyars with rich gifts. It was here that Ivan the Terrible's father came to pray for the heir.

  The Kirillo–Belozersky Monastery is one of the largest monasteries in Russia, the center of the spiritual life of the Russian North. The walls of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery surround a fairly extensive territory and turn the monastery into a huge impregnable fortress. More than 40 architectural structures have been preserved to this day, including 11 temples. During the tour, tourists get acquainted with the history of the monastery and architectural monuments of the XV - XVII centuries.

  The tour includes a visit to the exhibitions in the Refectory. The Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve preserves unique monuments associated with the name of St. Cyril. A fur coat, a hood, a leather belt, a bucket in a case and chains dating from the 14th – 15th centuries – all this, according to legend, belonged to the founder of the monastery. All the relics have exceptional historical value as material evidence of the daily life of the great ascetic and are presented in the museum exposition.

  Separate complexes of the exposition are devoted to monastic economy, obediences and reflect the monks' occupations, their activities not only inside the monastery, but also outside the monastery walls. In the display cases, one can see the contributions of grand dukes and royalty, as well as exhibits that introduce visitors to the history of the Nilo-Sora Desert, the Kirillo-Novoezersky and Goritsky monasteries.

• Sightseeing tour of Kirillov "Pages of the history of a provincial town" with a visit to the National House (Museum of E.N. Preobrazhensky).

  Using the example of a small provincial town, significant events from the history of the country from the 14th to the 21st centuries are revealed: the foundation of monasteries; the emergence and development of the first settlements in the Russian North; the first decrees on urban planning of county towns; the revolution of 1917 and the Great Patriotic War, as well as how the city lives today.

  During a walking tour of the city of Kirillov, founded in 1776 by decree of Catherine II, tourists get acquainted with its history, crafts and crafts of the 18th and 19th centuries, the architectural buildings of the central part of the same period and the peculiarities of provincial life in the past and present. The well-preserved merchant houses of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Kazan Cathedral, small parks and other memorable places give the city a special look.

  The Evgeny Preobrazhensky Museum is a joint project of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve and the Russian Military Historical Society. The exhibition is dedicated to Soviet aviation during the Great Patriotic War, as well as pilots from the Kirillovsky district, participants in the war, designers of aviation equipment and aviation weapons. The main exhibition tells about the life of an outstanding pilot, born and raised on Kirillov land, Evgeny Nikolaevich Preobrazhensky. His name is known far beyond the Vologda region.
