In connection with the construction of a railway bridge over the Ob River during the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1893, the village of Novaya Derevnya arose, which was later renamed the village of Alexandrovsky, in honor of Emperor Alexander III, and in 1895 the village was named after Emperor Nicholas II – Novonikolaevsky.
Novosibirsk received its current name in 1926.

The first exhibits of the Novosibirsk Art Gallery were works transferred to it from the funds of the Ministries of Culture of the RSFSR and the USSR, from the vaults of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Hermitage Museum, the State Russian Museum, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the Pavlovsky Palace Museum, and in 1960 sixty paintings and sketches from the heritage were received for permanent storage.
