During the 13th-14th centuries, the life of the fortress city was very difficult. Whoever owned Rzhev became the owner of both a powerful fortress and part of an important trade route.
Ancient 18th-century mansions have been preserved on the right bank of the Volga River. One of them now houses the Rzhevsky Museum of Local Lore.
