The history of the museum began in 1923, when the Museum of the local region was opened in the mansion of the Yaushev brothers. From the moment of its opening to the present day, the museum has been continuously working on the creation and preservation of exhibitions.
In 2006, the museum moved to a new building, which was designed by S.F. Yakobyuk. It was built on the site of the Chelyabinsk fortress of the XVIII century and resembles the outlines of a defensive structure with towers.
To date, the collections contain about 300,000 exhibits telling about the history of the region, culture, nature and archaeological finds.
