Everyone knows what a “gold rush” is, first of all, thanks to the genius Jack London. But few people know that this fever started in the modest town of Berezovsky, 12 kilometers from Yekaterinburg.
Gold has been sought in Russia for centuries, but without success. On May 21, 1745, Yerofey Markov, a peasant from the village of Shartash, found “a tile, on the one hand, like gold and... There are 3 or 4 grains of the same, especially similar to gold.”
The samples were immediately tested. Gold! The very next summer, the mines built on that site marked the beginning of the gold mining industry in Russia.
The famous Ural writer P. P. Bazhov told about the rare discovery of a golden nugget by the schismatic Yerofey Sidorovich Markov in the fairy tale “Golden Dykes”.
And in 1814, the master L.I.Brusnitsyn discovered gold-bearing sands under a layer of sediment along the rivers. "Washing factories" were quickly built on them, and gold mining rates skyrocketed.
Rumors began to spread that “gold is being shoveled in Berezovsk.” Placer gold was easily mined, did not require special equipment, and was four times cheaper. The first “gold rush" began in the country.
