Yuryevets is the oldest city in the Ivanovo region, founded in 1225 by Grand Duke Yuri (George) of Vladimir Vsevolodovich. It was once a fortress city on the border of the Northeastern lands, then a major trading port on the Volga. The city is celebrating its 800th anniversary this year.
Among the famous Yuriev residents are Archpriest Avvakum, architects the Vesnin brothers, directors Andrei Tarkovsky and the storyteller of our childhood Alexander Rowe.
On the route of a walking tour of the city and along the embankment you will see: the ancient Yuryevets settlement, the ramparts of the former fortress "White City", the Church of the Epiphany (XVII century) – one of the most beautiful temples in Russia with the burial of St. Simon the Blessed, the Entrance Jerusalem Cathedral with its amazing acoustics and a 65-meter five-tiered beautiful bell tower.
Getting to know the city with a guide.
Visit to one of the museums:
- The Museum of film director Andrei Tarkovsky. Andrey Arsenyevich Tarkovsky is a recognized master of cinema, a talented Russian director. His films have become an integral part of the culture of our century. The origins of his work come from the small Volga town of Yuryevets, which he considered his homeland.
- The Vesnin Brothers Museum. On January 15, 1986, the Vesnin Brothers Museum of Architects was opened in Yuryevets. It was located in a small two-storey red brick house of the 19th century, which until 1904 belonged to the Vesnins' parents, merchants of the first guild. The exhibition is based on watercolor landscapes from the childhood and youth of the future architects, as well as documents and photographs from the family archive, sketches of design works from different periods of their work.
Lunch at a cafe on the route.
Transfer to Kineshma, which is located on the banks of the Volga River.
The first mention of the city dates back to the 15th century. However, in the following centuries, Kineshma was, although large and rich, but a rural settlement (sloboda). Kineshma received city status only in 1777 as part of Catherine's city reforms. In addition to the Volga trade, the city also developed its own textile industry.
Sightseeing tour of Kineshma.
The city has retained its provincial charm and the atmosphere of a county merchant town – the one- and two-story houses of merchants and burghers of the 19th century are organically complemented by the mansions of merchant manufacturers, majestic public buildings, and temple ensembles.
A tour of the historical center will allow you to see the majestic cathedrals and temples, the wealth of mansions, the famous Volzhsky Boulevard, the grandiose Trinity Assumption Cathedral, founded back in 1745, an example of Russian church architecture of the XVIII century.
Nearby is the magnificent openwork bell tower of the cathedral, erected in 1798. And the Kineshma Red Rows are a monument of Russian architectural eclecticism, where everything is mixed up: Romanesque monumentality, classical rigor and modern elegance.
