The Great Stand on the Ugra River Diorama Museum is the first museum complex in Russia dedicated to the military campaign of 1480. It was created on the initiative and works of the Kaluga Monastery of St. Tikhon's Deserts.
The diorama Museum is located on the territory that in 1480 was occupied by troops who participated in the Great Stand on the Ugra. The diorama accurately conveys the picture of those historical days when the Russian army under the command of Grand Duke John III defeated the troops of the Horde Khan Akhmat, about the end of the Tatar-Mongol yoke that weighed on Russia for 243 years, about the birth of Moscow Rus in the XV century.
The author of the painting "Standing on the Ugra River" is Pavel Ryzhenko, for whom this work was the last in his life. Archaeological evidence of those events and samples of military weapons and armor are presented in a separate room.
