Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Climbing the Mutnovsky volcano. The Canyon is Dangerous

    Meeting with the group:

    • at 7:00 in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky;
    • at 8:00 in the village of Paratunka.

The exact time and place of departure will be announced by the tour leader of the group on the eve of departure.

Departure to the Mutnovsky volcano (about 100 km) by a KAMAZ all-terrain vehicle. Travel on a dirt road through the Vilyuchinsky pass.

Stop at the Vilyuchinsky pass, which offers a magnificent panorama of the neighboring volcanoes — Vilyuchinsky and Gorely.

11:30 Arrival at the starting point of the hiking route.

The briefing. Ascent along the slope of the Mutnovsky volcano to the edge of the crater (the height of the volcano is 2323 m, ascent to about 2000 m, about 2 hours). The trail passes through a snowfield that does not melt even in summer.

Mutnovsky Volcano is a natural monument located partly on the territory of the South Kamchatka Natural Park, which was included in the UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage List in 1996 in the nomination "Volcanoes of Kamchatka".

The volcano consists of 4 merged, successively formed cones of stratovolcanoes. The heart of the volcano is the so—called Active Funnel — the largest crater of all active volcanoes in Kamchatka, as well as a fumarole field, where active fumarole activity is manifested.

After the collapse of rocks in 2021, which blocked part of the fault where the climbing path used to pass, a lake was formed. The movement continues to this day, changing the landscape. The new route runs along the slope, we will observe the activity from a height.

From the edge of the volcano, we will see a panorama of the Severo-Mutnovsky glacier, a landslide and a new lake, an active fumarole field with bubbling mud boilers and soaring fumaroles. In clear weather, there is a view of the neighboring volcanoes of the South Kamchatka group: Vilyuchinsky, Gorely, Khodutka, Opala.

We will spend about an hour here and start the descent back.

Return to the foot, inspect the powerful 80-meter waterfall in the ravine of the Dangerous Canyon.

Lunch — lunch box, hot tea.

In the evening, return to the village of Paratunka / Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

In case the route to Mutnovsky volcano is closed by the administration of the natural park, due to the increased activity of the volcano, an alternative route will be conducted: Dangerous Canyon, geothermal valley of Summer springs, Calm waterfall.

Meals: lunch is included, on excursions.

Duration: from 08:00 to 18:00 approximately.
