Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival. Visit to the Regional Museum of the Northern Ladoga Region
08:25 Arrival in Sortavala by train No. 160 B.
Meeting of the group at the railway station.
Transfer to the hotel. Things stay in the storage room.
08:30 Breakfast in a cafe in the city.
09:30-11:00 Walking tour of the historical center of Sortavala with a visit to the unique exhibition hall and wood carving workshop of the artist Kronid Gogolev.
Sortavala is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Karelia, characterized by its unique historical and cultural appearance, formed by three states: Sweden, Finland and Russia.
The city originated during the Swedish rule.
Its revival and economic development is associated with the period when the Principality of Finland joined the Russian Empire, and it reached its heyday as one of the cities of Finland, a sovereign state.
Today, Sortavala has the status of a historical city, with 247 cultural monuments on its territory.
The city is called the architectural encyclopedia of Finland of the early twentieth century.
The sightseeing tour will open all the pages of this encyclopedia and introduce you to the works of Finnish architects: E. Saarinen, J. Viiste, U. Ulberg, P. Blomstedt, J. Arenberg and others.
11:10 Visit To The Regional Museum Of The Northern Ladoga Region.

The museum has the main exhibition "Stone Keys of Sortavala" (sections: "Geology and landscapes", "Mining and Metallurgy", "Ethnography and Archeology", "Architecture and Art", "Communications", "War and Politics"), created with the funds of an international project.
The museum's halls also feature expositions "Dr. Winter's House" and "Stove Benches", exhibitions "Bear Country", "Where does the Riddle live?".

Sightseeing tour of the central estate of the monastery with a visit to the Transfiguration Cathedral, the old fraternal and abbot cemeteries.
Lunch in the monastery refectory.
Transfer to Nikonovskaya Bay. Guided tour of the famous hermitages of Valaam: the Resurrection Monastery, where the lower temple has a semblance of the cave of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and the Gethsemane hermitage.
From May to October, a boat tour of Ladoga Skerries National Park.
In the period from June to October, an excursion to the highest waterfall of the Northwest "Yukankoski" (White Bridges).
The height of Yukanokoski reaches 19 meters, which is 8 meters higher than the Kivach Waterfall, a particularly popular and well–known Karelian landmark. Check into the village of Tunica, where you can take part in the extraction of almandine garnet, a stone as red as blackberry juice with a slight violet hue. This stone, called "Kidel venisa", is emblazoned in the crown of the Swedish kings.… Each participant of the tour will be able to keep a semi-precious stone as a souvenir.

Day 5 - Ruskeala Mountain Park. Completion of the tour
Breakfast at the hotel restaurant, free time.
Room release.
11:00 – 11:30 Transfer to Ruskeala Mountain Park (30 km).
On the way, stop at Tohmajoki Waterfall.
This is a very picturesque place, the waterfall flows into a small lake closed from all sides by high shores, from different shores of which there are different views of the waterfall.
11:30 – 14:30 Marble Canyon tour.
During this tour you will get acquainted with the unique natural landscapes. For more than 70 years (until the middle of the nineteenth century), decorative light gray marble was broken out in local quarries to decorate the temples and palaces of St. Petersburg, the fountains of Petrodvorets, the columns of Tsarskoye Selo and Gatchina. Magical lakes with clear water in a beautiful Ruskeal marble bowl will make an indelible impression.
For an additional fee, the opportunity to visit the Underground Ruskeala tour (find out the cost when ordering the tour).
The new route of the Mountain Park, the Underground Lake, has become a real pearl of Karelia in the Year of Ecology.
The route was created at the intersection of geography, geology, hydrology, ecology, and mining history. Its length is about 800 meters.
It consists of a system of mysterious tunnels and a large columned marble hall with a mysterious lake. These are artificial dungeons, but they also have a vibrant natural component. Ruskeala tunnels and mines were created more than a hundred years ago by Finnish craftsmen.
The total length of the mine workings was several kilometers (so far only a small part has been explored). The voids formed as a result of intensive marble mining resemble the ancient temple complex in their scale and aesthetics. Moreover, it is half filled with water.
From July to December, it is an underground "lake of dreams" (in sheer marble walls with a misty haze and a shaky surface), and in winter and spring it is the "Palace of the Snow Queen" (with a transparent ice floor and frosty decorations).
In winter, due to the special microclimate, the water turns into thick transparent ice, which does not melt until July. Nature creates here bizarre combinations of ice stalactites and stalagmites, transparent draperies.
Return to Sortavala.
15:00 Lunch at a cafe in the city.
Transfer to the railway station (you will be at the railway station by 18:00), departure home.
