Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival. Visit to the Regional Museum of the Northern Ladoga Region
08:19 Arrival in Sortavala by train No. 160 B.
Meeting of the group at the railway station.
Transfer to the hotel. Things remain in the storage room.

09:30-11:00 Walking tour of the historical center of Sortavala with a visit to the unique exhibition hall and wood carving workshop of the artist Kronid Gogolev.
Sortavala is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Karelia, characterized by the originality of the historical and cultural appearance formed by three states: Sweden, Finland and Russia.
The city originated during the Swedish rule.
Its revival and economic development is associated with the period when the Principality of Finland joined the Russian Empire, and it reached its heyday as one of the cities of Finland – a sovereign state.
Today, Sortavala has the status of a historical city, with 247 cultural monuments on its territory.
The city is called the architectural encyclopedia of Finland of the early twentieth century.
The sightseeing tour will open all the pages of this encyclopedia and familiarize you with the works of Finnish architects: E. Saarinen, Y. Viiste, U. Ulberg, P. Blomstedt, J. Arenberg and others.

The museum has the main exposition "Stone Keys of Sortavala" (sections: "Geology and landscapes", "Mining and Metallurgy", "Ethnography and Archaeology", "Architecture and Art", "Communications", "War and Politics"), created with the funds of an International project.
In the halls of the Museum there are also expositions "Dr. Winter's House" and "Stove-benches", exhibitions "Bear Country", "Where does the riddle live?".

Sightseeing tour of the central estate of the monastery with a visit to the Transfiguration Cathedral, the old fraternal and hegumen cemeteries.
Lunch in the monastery refectory.
Transfer to Nikonovskaya Bay. A tour of the famous monasteries of Balaam: the Resurrection Monastery, where a semblance of the cave of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is arranged in the lower temple, and the Gethsemane monastery.
In the period from May to October, a boat tour of the Ladoga Skerries National Park.
In the period from June to October, an excursion to the highest waterfall in the Northwest "Yukankoski" (White Bridges).
The height of the Yukanokoski reaches 19 meters, which is 8 meters higher than a particularly popular and well–known Karelian landmark - Kivach Waterfall. Check in at the place of the Tunic, where you can take part in the extraction of almandine pomegranate, a red stone - like blackberry juice with a slight violet shade. This stone, called the "Kidel venisa", is emblazoned in the crown of the Swedish kings...". Each participant of the tour will be able to leave a semi-precious stone as a souvenir.
Depending on the time of year, snowmobiling or quad biking.

Day 5 - Ruskeala Mountain Park. Completion of the tour

Room release.
Transfer to Ruskeala Mountain Park (30 km).
On the way, stop at the Tohmajoki Waterfall.
This is a very picturesque place, the waterfall flows into a small lake closed from all sides by high shores, from different shores of which there are various views of the waterfall.
Marble Canyon tour.
During this tour you will get acquainted with the unique natural landscapes. For more than 70 years (until the middle of the nineteenth century), decorative light gray marble was broken out in local quarries to decorate the temples and palaces of St. Petersburg, the fountains of Petrodvorets, the columns of Tsarskoye Selo and Gatchina. Magical lakes with clear water in a beautiful bowl of Ruskeal marble will make an indelible impression.
For an additional fee, you can visit the excursion "Underground Ruskeala" (find out the cost when ordering an excursion).
The real pearl of Karelia in the Year of Ecology was the new route of the Mountain Park - "Underground Lake".
The route was created at the intersection of geography, geology, hydrology, ecology, and mining history. Its length is about 800 meters.
It consists of a system of mysterious tunnels and a large columned marble hall with a mysterious lake. These are artificial dungeons, but they also have a bright natural component. Ruskeala tunnels and mines were created more than a hundred years ago by Finnish craftsmen.
The total length of the mine workings was several kilometers (only a small part has been studied so far). The voids formed as a result of intensive marble mining resemble the ancient temple complex in their scale and aesthetics. Moreover, it is half filled with water.
From July to December– it is an underground "lake of dreams" (in steep marble walls with a hazy haze and a shaky surface), and in winter and spring it is the "Palace of the Snow Queen" (with a transparent ice floor and frosty decorations).
In winter, due to the special microclimate, the water turns into thick transparent ice, which does not melt until July. Nature creates bizarre combinations of ice stalactites and stalagmites, transparent draperies here.
Return to Sortavala.
Lunch at a cafe in the city.
Transfer to the railway station, departure home.
