Kolyma auto tour: Yakutsk — Oymyakon — Magadan

This trip is a real expedition. You will drive from Yakutsk to Magadan along the Kolyma Highway, the famous "road on bones" built by GULAG prisoners during the Stalinist repressions.

Kolyma is a road of contrasts. On the one hand, this is a long-term "camp history" that has left behind chilling ghost towns. On the other hand, these are incredibly picturesque landscapes of mountain ranges and high passes and the sincere hospitality of local residents living in one of the harshest places in Russia.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - The way to Khandyga

For acclimatization, we recommend arriving in Yakutsk the day before the start of the tour.

We recommend staying at the Azimut 3* hotel. The hotel is located in the city center.

08:00 Meeting at the airport, arriving on the day of the tour start. Those who arrived the day before will be picked up from the hotel.

Arrival at the fish market of the city.

    The beginning of the journey.

Today you will find two ice crossings across the Lena (15 km) and Aldan (1.5 km) rivers.

After 100 km, stop for lunch at a roadside cafe in the village of Tyngulyu.

The village of Tyngyulu is located on a unique permafrost landscape — on the Alas.

Alas is formed by pulling out underground ice (thermokarst), shrinkage of soil and rocks, suffusion, karst, etc. The lowlands of Alas are usually covered with a swampy lake, and the slopes with meadow—steppe vegetation.

Today, the road is rich in sculptures. Many of them are dedicated to the heroes of the epic and the tales of the Sakha people. We will make a stop at one of them, the sculpture of the hero Nyurgun Bootur.

The village of Khandyga is the center of the industrial Tomponsky district.

The former territory of Dalstroy begins from the Aldan River, on which the village is located.

The settlement was founded in 1938 as a base for the construction of the Kolyma highway in the direction of Magadan. During World War II, an airfield was built here for the Alaska-Siberian air route, along which American Lend-Lease aircraft were delivered to the Eastern Front.

Arriving in Khandyga, you will visit the local museum, whose exhibitions are dedicated to the history of Dalstroy.

Overnight you will stay in the guest house of the village.

The length of the car route is 432 km, 8-9 hours on the way.
