We move to Teriberka (about 3 hours by car on the way, depending on the condition of the road).
Teriberka is a small village by the sea. People have been living in this place since the 17th century, traditionally local people were engaged in fishing. In the middle of the 19th century, a kind of rise began here: the area was actively colonized due to the rich
seafood from the Barents Sea, whaling was actively developing.
By the beginning of the 20th century, Teriberka turned out to be a fully fledged settlement — there were churches, a lighthouse, a school, a paramedic station. After the revolution, a collective farm was organized in the village, a dairy farm and herds of deer were added to the fishing industry.
By the end of the 60s, stagnation gradually began, followed by the decline of the village. Currently, about 1,000 people live here, there is no school, hospital or production facilities. The authorities planned to relocate residents to Murmansk, but this process is moving very slowly.
Everyone knows that Teriberka became widely known after the film "Leviathan", which caused a mixed public reaction. It is thanks to the film, the fashion for the Arctic and the fact that Teriberka is the only place on the shores of the Barents Sea that can be reached by an ordinary car, tourists are now arriving here.
So you have the opportunity to personally assess how truthfully Leviathan reveals the problems of life in the Far North. And at the same time, visit almost the northernmost point of Russia and look at the ocean. The harsh landscapes of the North, especially during the polar night, will surely leave a big mark on your soul.
We arrive in Teriberka, check into a comfortable one on the outskirts of the village. Before lunch, we will have time to ride a snowmobile sledge along the tundra and the coast of the Barents Sea — we will see the famous Dragon Beach and the frozen waterfall falling into the sea.
And, of course, today we will hunt the northern lights again! In winter, if you are lucky, you can see it even without leaving your room, as the hotel is located in a secluded place where there is no illumination from the village.
And after lunch we will take a short walk around the village – we will see the cemetery of ships, an abandoned school, swing on a swing on the seashore, walk to a ship washed up on a sandy beach.
We will see:
- the legendary village of Teriberka;
