Teriberka. Whales in the Barents Sea

This is not often (2-3 times a year), but it happens for two reasons: a storm and military exercises. 

In 7 years of conducting tours, we have only been to military exercises 2 times when civilian vessels are prohibited from going to sea. 

Storms occur in autumn and spring, less often in summer. It is extremely rare that it storms for all 3 days, usually it turns out to shift the exit to a more or less calmed sea.

In our experience, whale activity can be at any time, it is not predictable. Activity peaks depend on processes in the world's oceans that are not fully understood. But it should be understood that the sea is not an aquarium, and whales are not trained animals that come at a whistle. It is impossible to predict in advance whether there will be an encounter with whales, how many there will be, what they will do (show their fin, tail, or jump out of the water). 

Whale season usually begins in May, when whales begin migrating from west to east. By autumn, different situations develop from year to year — it happens that there are whales in the fall, it happens that there are not.

Insurance is not included in the price of the tour. If desired, you can apply for it on the website of a Large Country without commission directly from insurance companies.

The program is scheduled as standard for the period from the beginning of May to November. Since the daylight is different in different months of the year, and the weather can make its own adjustments, the guide is guided by the actual circumstances and forms the timing of the program after the fact. Usually, all groups have time to see everything that is stated in the program, but at different times and in different sequences.

It is important to understand that in May and November, due to weather conditions, the road to Teriberka may be closed (if there is a strong wind and a snowstorm), in May and early November this is rare, but it happens. In this case, an alternative program will be offered.

In case the group stays in Teriberka for an additional night due to the blocked road, an additional overnight stay at the hotel and meals are paid for independently.

We recommend taking tickets home on these dates with the possibility of postponing departure!

If you are (for any reason) 1 hour or more late for the scheduled meeting time, then the group may not be able to wait for you — the program will begin to shorten. Therefore, in case of a long delay and delay for a group transfer, you may need a transfer to Teriberka, which is paid additionally (from 3,000 rubles per person, if you can find a combined transfer, up to 9,000 rubles. an individual car).

Due to the increased flight delays due to airport closures due to the danger of UAVs, we recommend arriving in Murmansk the day before the start of the tour or arriving by train. This way you will have the opportunity to see Murmansk (we will tell you what is more interesting to visit).

All the boats we work with are licensed to carry passengers! This is important because not all boats in Teriberka issue licenses, meaning they illegally transport people. 

We rent Yamaha speedboats – you can travel a longer distance on them (since sometimes the whales will be far from the village, this is a plus). Also, the sides of such a boat are quite low, which allows you to be closer to the water and get a better look at the whales. 

It is believed that the smaller the ship, the more seasick it is, but this is not entirely true, since motion sickness is more dependent on pitching, and pitching depends on waves.

Unfortunately, pets cannot be accommodated in the hotel where you are going to be accommodated. But there are hotels where you can, so participants with pets are usually accommodated in dog-friendly hotels.

On tours starting in mid—August and autumn, there is also a great chance to see not only whales, but also the northern Lights - it is at this time that the season of high geomagnetic activity begins, which means there are good chances to see the aurora in clear weather. 

On tours from May to early August, you will not be able to see the aurora borealis, since it is a polar day on the Kola Peninsula at this time (the sun does not set below the horizon, there is no darkness). It is also necessary to take into account the weather conditions at sea. If it is impossible to go to sea, the boat trip program may be postponed to the next day or canceled.

The trip is suitable for adults and children over 8 years old (accompanied by adult relatives, younger age is discussed individually). The upper limit of the age is up to 60 years.

You can have lunch and dinner (usually 2-3 lunches and 2 dinners) in one of the restaurants in Teriberka. However, due to the busy restaurants on weekends and holidays, it is necessary to book in advance (we will provide information about all restaurants).

Meeting at the airport or in the city (Flagship Shopping center, 51 Geroyev Rybachy St.) of your choice. 

Due to the frequent flight delays due to airport closures, we recommend arriving in Murmansk the day before the start of the tour or arriving by train. This way you will have the opportunity to see Murmansk (we will tell you what is more interesting to visit). 

The meeting time at the airport is 09:30, near the Flagship shopping center, 51 Geroyev Rybachy St. at 10:00 (adjustments may be made in case of changes in arrival flights to Murmansk). 

Near the Flagship shopping center there is a coffee shop "White Rabbit" (3 Krupskaya St.), where you can have breakfast (open from 08:00 on weekdays and 10:00 on weekends). 

Suitable arrival flights to Murmansk are between 08:00 and 09:00, departure from Murmansk is between 18:30 and 19:30 (there will be a transfer for these flights). On the third day of the tour, the transfer will be first to the airport, then to the city.

It is worth considering that we are going to the North, besides to the sea. The weather is very unpredictable. It's better to dress warmly and take something off than to freeze. 

Temperatures vary from month to month, but wind and sometimes rain (there may be snow in the first half of May and the end of October-November) can lower the temperature "feels like", and you need to be prepared for negative daytime temperatures to about -5. 

The temperature in May, October, November is -5+10; in June +5+20; in July and August +5+22, in September 0+15. In May and November, there is still/already snow in places. Snow lies (and may fall) on Kola Island until mid-March and early November.
