Once the largest city in the north-east of Russia, its ramparts reached a length of 2.5 km.
The city, the very foundation of which marked the future formation of a unified Russian state.
The Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral of the 12th century and the ensembles of six monasteries, which miraculously survived the invasions of the Tatar-Mongols and the Polish-Lithuanian intervention of the 17th century, remind of these times.
