Not far from the town of Ostashkov, on Lake Seliger, lies Stolobny Island, on which the walls and temples of the Ancient Russian Monastery, the Nilo–Stolobenskaya Desert, rise majestically.
The monastery was founded in the XVI century. The richest monastery in Russia was created by many famous architects: K. Rossi, A. Melnikov, I. Charlemagne, A. Battani.
Nilova Pustyn is a whole city consisting of buildings of various purposes: residential and farm buildings, rooms for the abbot of the monastery and the brethren, a hotel, barns, cellars.
There are also blacksmiths, ship repair shops, a stable yard and an orchard. In the middle of the monastery stands the Cathedral of the Epiphany of the Lord.
You will be able to climb the bell tower, which offers a magnificent panorama of the lake, surrounding islands, small villages and temples. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Nile Desert was the most visited Russian shrine and the second in the world after the Holy Sepulchre.

You will see a small but beautifully planned city on a beautiful peninsula, which has preserved many buildings of very interesting architecture, left over from several centuries of its rich history. A peculiar feature of the city is the feeling that it stands directly on the water.
Bogorodichny Monastery in Ostashkov is a modest, beautiful in its simplicity, strict monastery, one of the oldest and most amazing architectural monuments, the spiritual centers of the Upper Volga region.
Founded in 1716, the monastery was dedicated to the main highly revered local shrine, the Smolensk Icon of Our Lady of Odigitria, the protector and patroness of Ostashkov.
An excursion to the Museum of Local Lore, which has a rich collection of fine arts and tells about the crafts and crafts of the Ostash, about the rich cultural and historical traditions of the region.
