Linking equipment to the trunk of ATVs.
Briefing, test passes, checking ATVs.
11:00 The expedition starts in the direction of Dyatlov Pass – in the national Mansiysk village of Ushma.
On the way, a group of quadrocyclists fords several mountain rivers: Vizhai, Toshemka, Ushma.
On rainy days, crossings are a serious challenge — both the current is fast and the water level is high.
In this case, experienced guides, using their knowledge of the route, indicate the places for crossing equipment along the most optimal path or use auxiliary means - inflatable gondolas.
The route of the ATV tour to Dyatlov Pass runs along a remote taiga all-terrain road.
The first part of the route ends in the national Mansiysk village of Ushma (60 km from the starting point), which is a camp of several residential buildings located on both banks of the taiga Lozva River, standing mixed with leaning log cabins and traditional "huts on chicken legs".
There are no fences and vegetable gardens in Ushma.
The Mansi are not engaged in agriculture, but live exclusively by hunting.
Men are engaged in fishing in the forest in search of game, and women are engaged in raising children, dressing hides, making products and souvenirs, shoes (boots and burkas), baskets (tuyaski), clothes (malitsa, hats) and other household items, crafts and hunting (dolls, spoons, plates, kamusovye skiing).
Mansi also succeeded in processing and dressing the skins of valuable animals (mink, marten, sable).
One of the attractions of this place is the remains of the first colony—settlement in the USSR, where the liberated prisoners lived.
In Soviet times, a sawmill, a sauna, a bakery worked here, as well as a park with children's swings and flower beds.
Since the end of the 70s, the colony ceased to exist, the inhabitants of the village left these places due to lack of work and prospects.
At the moment, the remains of the village make a depressing impression: destroyed and abandoned houses, the remains of a cattle yard and piles of twisted metal.
Better than other buildings, a well—preserved wooden punishment cell with three cells for prisoners - upper bunks on huge chains, large barn-type locks, no light, no washbasin, no toilet.
There are not even bunks in the next solitary cell: only walls and a concrete floor.
15:00-16:00 Rest and lunch in a clearing in a bend of the river.
During the day, the team is provided with lunch packaged in individual lunch boxes (according to the menu).
After a short break, the team continues north to the base camp, located at the beginning of the ascent to the pass.
The final part of the road passes through old paths full of all-terrain vehicles.
19:00 (20:00) Arrival at the parking lot called "Ilyich's hut" or "Ilyich's base".
Earlier, at the time of the state farms, it was a nut-fishing base. Pine nuts were harvested in a mighty old cedar tree about five kilometers away from her.
The base is located in a picturesque place: around a high-trunked pine forest, on the vast ples river, where the watchman of the geological party Ilyich once fished.
Geologists have long since left these places, but the name of the place remains.
20:00-22:00 Unpacking of personal belongings, arrangement of a mobile camp for the night (installation of tents and a campfire tent), collective harvesting of firewood for an evening campfire and a night party.
22:00 Taiga dinner on the riverbank.
Rest.
Communication of travelers around the evening campfire, planning the further route of the expedition.
24:00 Hang up.
Overnight on the banks of the Lozva River, Northern Urals, Sverdlovsk region.
The participants of the expedition rest in their own or club tents, sleep on tourist mats in insulated sleeping bags.
The distance of the off-road part of the route: from 90 to 120 km.
