Elbrus. Climbing from the South

Elbrus, the highest peak of the Caucasus, Russia and Europe, the height of the Western peak is 5642 meters. 

Climbing Elbrus from the south is technically simple and suitable even for beginners who come to the mountains for the first time. Cable cars are laid on the southern slope, there are several shelters for climbers, mobile communication works almost the entire route.

For climbing, we issue certificates and license plates established by the FAR.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Hiking in the Terskol gorge

    Meeting in the Ministry of Water at 10:00-12:00. Transfer from 10:00 to 11:00 at the railway station, from 11:30 to 12:00 at the airport.

    Transfer to the Baksan gorge in the village of Terskol, altitude 2100 meters.

    We check into a hotel or a campsite.

    This is where the pre-acclimatization stage begins, which will take 4 days.

     After lunch, a walk to the Terskol waterfall.

    The climb is 600 meters, the duration is 2-3 hours up, 1 hour 30 minutes down.

  • Day 4 - Ascent to Itkol-Bashi 3531 m.

Shelter

The shelter where we are staying is a five-minute walk from the upper station of the cable car. There is an MTS tower practically on the territory, there is round-the-clock electricity in the shelter, you can always turn on the heater and charge your gadgets. Comfortable four-bed rooms, kitchens in separate trailers, a shower appeared at the end of the 2020 season!

The Legend Hotel

The Legend Hotel is located on the territory of the Cheget ski complex in the village of Terskol in Kabardino-Balkaria. Among the services there are: high-speed Wi-Fi, private parking, 24-hour front desk and a lounge area with a billiard table.

The tourist accommodation fund has 2, 3-bed categories of standard rooms, suites, junior suites and cottages. Each is equipped with a bed and a pull-out sofa, a TV and a private bathroom with a shower cabin.

A delicious breakfast is served in the morning. The Edelweiss Cafe and a grocery store are 460 m away.

After 510 m, you can sign up for a horse ride in the surrounding area. The Polyana Cheget cable car station is open at 439 m. The nearest transport infrastructure hubs are located in Nalchik. The distance to the airport is 94.4 km, the railway station is 92.9 km away.

  • A backpack of 65-80 liters with a rigid back and the ability to glue a mat and an ice axe on the outside. A cape for a backpack from the rain (rent for 9 days – 300 rubles/ day);

  • Sandals or light sneakers for the camp;

Climbing clothes for 5-9 days

  • A lightweight down jacket with a hood, should be worn under a windproof jacket (rent 4-9 days – 300 rubles / day);
  • High–rise puffer jacket, mandatory in spring and autumn above 5000 meters (rent 4-5 days - 400 rubles / day);
  • Insulated climbing boots (rent of plastic double boots for 4-5 days – 400-600 rubles/day);
  • Insulated shoe covers allow you to use trekking boots on climbing (rent 4-5 days – 150 rubles / day);
  • Gaiters for feet from snow and dirt getting into shoes (rent 4-5 days – 100 rubles/ day);
  • Mask, buff or balaclava to protect your face from the wind;
  • Warm, windproof gloves, better mittens (rent 4-5 days – 150 rubles/ day);

Other

  • Headlamp with 1 battery pack (rent 4-9 days – 100 rubles/day);
